I know there are other threads about this, but for some reason they aren’t coming up in the search engine, or maybe I’m not searching the right terms. It keeps coming up with unrelated stuff.

If you could live anywhere in the United States and raise a family with these specifications, where would it be? A wholesome environment preferrably large in Catholic base and values, a balance of weather (not to hot or cold all the time), and especially an affordable cost of living. Preferrably a homeschooling community, but not overly necessary. It needs to be relatively close to a city or business center for jobs.

Abby,

Cincinnati and Steubenville (I kid you not).

Steubenville is only 25 minutes from Pittsburgh, so there is a bit of a commute, but there are huge homeschooling groups, great family oriented parishes, the area is very inexpensive to live in, but it is not all that nice looking.

I have heard a lot of great stuff about Cincinnati, but I would have to let you talk to friends of mine who live there to get the info first-hand.

I grew up in Long Island and almost every family that I knew was Catholic. High cost of living but a good place to raise a family.

The south is cheaper but the north is more Catholic. Illinois seems to come up a LOT in conversations, too.

I noticed Fidelis mentioned Gilbert, AZ. It seems to be 30 minutes from Phoenix, where a close cousin of ours lives. I’m not sure what the cost of living is there, though.

Yes, I have heard a lot about Illinois, too…

There is a Catholic community in Covington, GA that seems to meet all of your requirements, with Atlanta being the big city around here. We sometimes go to the perpetual adoration chapel in the community and know that there is a house for sale there that they are struggling to sell (last we heard, +/- 4 months ago, it was selling for $132,000 and is over 3000 square feet). We would have loved to live in a community like that, but it was a little out of our price range. They have a retreat center in the community, and the website is mindspring.com/~jspink/solthoste.htm

It’s a SOLT community (same order as Fr. Corapi 😉 ) and has a homeschooling group. Of course, being in the Bible Belt, there are many more Protestants than Catholics, but for the most part, it is an extremely Christian part of the country with good, traditional values. We would not want to move out of Georgia if at all possible 🙂
