Hi I need help knowing about getting married later in my life. I have always thought about the idea of getting married but I don’t know if that’s what I should do. In the letters to the Corinthians Paul says how it is better for a man to be single to be closer to God. I am afraid that if I get married I will not be able to do this.

The second thing is that I used to have a problem with masturbation. This really mortified me and made me be more cautious about the decisions that I made, as I don’t want to fall into a big sin like that again.

Please help me know what I should do?

The church has explained those passages by saying that priesthood or religious life is objectively a higher calling, but the vocation to marriage or the single life is also a good thing. In fact, for those persons who are called to married life it is not better. How can it be better to become a priest if God is calling you specifically to the vocation of marriage? That would be basing your whole priesthood, which is supposed to be a listening to God and following His call, off of a blatant disobedience to Gods will for your life.

Many people deal with a problem with masterbation and still get married. If God is calling you to the married life he is calling you even though you are a sinner. Do not be discouraged by your sins, but pray all the more and always continue to get back up again if you fall.

Seeing as you are young, and presumably single, I would say that now is a better time to discern whether or not you have a vocation to the priesthood or the religious life. The vocation to marriage is unique in that it involves another person. I would use this time in your youth while you are free of any attatchments to discern whether you have a religious vocation as it will make things easier. If you do, you won’t need to worry about marriage any longer! If you don’t you will have removed that possibility and can begin to focus more on your understanding of what the vocation of marriage actually is. Start dating some people, see if there is someone out there for you. Whatever you are called to do, pray and keep in union with the Church and you will find your way.

EDIT

By the way, Spouses also grow closer to God through matrimony. The difference is that they cannot focus all of their time on spiritual realities, they must also be concerned with the care of each other and their families. However, again, this is not a bad thing, rather it is precisly the method God has chosen for them to grow closer to Himself.
