Planning to miss Mass... what do I do?

You could also pull up a Mass online. Doesn’t EWTN have links to some?

You might want to confirm, if there is a priest on board, that he actually is legit. At least one of the lines was using “rent a priest”, the majority of whom may have had “questionable incardination”. It has been too long since the matter came up; just a heads up.

To what point? That is not considered attending Mass by the Church. Is that just a “feel good” action?

We’re missing two Sundays in February for a Panama Canal cruise on Princess Cruise Lines. I don’t see how we’ll be able to attend mass for those two weeks. I don’t believe they’ll have a priest onboard, but we’ll ask once there. This thread was timely for us.
Ask once there is all you can do. That’s what I did. I also made it a strong point for the after-cruise survey, and strongly said that the availability of a priest will strongly influence our next choice of cruise.

“Bring it up” in confession is the same as “confess”. No. This is a recipe for scrupulosity.
Precisely. Sometimes I feel like spending too much time on CAF can be a recipe for scrupulosity.

See, I feel the opposite. Like CAF is where you learn that nothing is sinful. I think in both cases the problem is it’s a public place with a variety of poorly formed consciences. Present company excluded of course.

Last winter, our region got dumped with snow and many could not make it to church. The following Sunday the priest in his homily commented on the absences. He stated that it was perfectly fine, and that no one necessarily sinned. But, and here is the key point, he said where was your heart in this situation? Were you rejoicing and saying Woo Hoo I don’t have to go to mass today? Or were you disappointed of not being in the Lord’s house and did some quiet prayer in place of not being able to attend? The state of your mind/heart is the difference. My suggestion for the OP is to arrange some family prayer time in lieu of mass while on vacation. Have a wonderful trip. God bless you.

Why? Confession is for confessing sins. Why would you confess something that isn’t a sin? We’ve been over it a few times in this thread and several others. It isn’t sinful to miss Mass if you can’t go. It isn’t sinful in itself to go somewhere Mass isn’t available.

Father, I honestly don’t understand how many times you have to repeat this. I don’t know if folks aren’t reading your replies, or if they are driven by their own desire to be right.

I have noticed this too. I think it stems from the nature of this medium. People come on the forums asking strangers and laity about sins. The responsible thing to do is to point them to The Church and Her priests. Since many priests are busy with business it’s hard to “talk” to any priest for spiritual guidance outside the confessional. So we misuse the sacrament as an opportunity for a one on one meeting with a priest.

Yes! Like I said before, part of my favorite part about traveling us tasting the different flavors if Church. Sadly, Mass is almost always sweeter elsewhere. Much like food.

Agreed. Especially if you’re on the Church Council and you can bring back and share the good ideas from other parishes you observed while on vacation.

I wouldn’t take any advice here too seriously. Including my own. People will talk far more stridently and “authoritatively” on internet forums then they would dare to in real life, in person. Including me, sometimes.

Don’t all parishes have weekly appointment times blocked out, outside the confessional? I’ve actually never schedules an appointment with a priest but probably should, to discuss my spiritual life.

I just noticed the original poster’s trip has come and gone. Muting this thread.

They probably do have times blocked out, but depending on the parish, it might be weeks before an appointment time is available.
