FOSS is an organization modeled after Ven. Archdeacon Cavanagh’s offering of 100 consecutive Masses for the Holy Souls in Purgatory in the 1870s. Ven. Cavanagh was the parish priest of Knock, Ireland at that time. Shortly after he concluded the 100 Masses, the Virgin Mary appeared at Knock in her Vatican-approved apparition.
FOSS has a goal of having 200 Masses per day celebrated for all Holy Souls in Purgatory, especially all deceased members of FOSS. Each member pledges to have one Mass per year celebrated for the Holy Souls. (You can arrange more than one, but that’s optional.) You receive an e-mail reminder in the month of your birthday to arrange your pledged Mass, and you send an e-mail message back to FOSS to let them know you arranged for it. Masses can be arranged online through missions like Aid to the Church in Need or Seraphic Mass Association, through shrines or orders online, or at your local church (although their Mass books tend to fill up).
I joined FOSS a few years ago after it was recommended to me by someone on this forum, who I have no idea who it was at this point or whether they’re still posting here.
I just got finished arranging for my annual Mass, and thought I would pass the information on in case anyone else wished to join.
