Hello again. I have been trying to find out more information about the sacrament of the Eucharist and have read a few Catholic blog posts tonight but I am getting mixed messages.

I am baptised but have not had confirmation. I attend Mass but always sit out Holy Communion because I always thought I had to be confirmed to receive the body and blood of Christ.

There are some blog posts that are saying you just need to be baptised and others saying no you need to be confirmed. My mother who is in the same position as me has told me that she has before received Holy Communion, she doesn’t attend any more due to ill health. I’m a little confused as to whether I should be adhering to 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 or not yet.

Did you ever receive any preparation for receiving Holy Communion and have a First Communion?

The common age for children to receive 1st Confession and 1st Communion is age 7.

The common age (in the US) for children to be Confirmed is 14.

Baptism is the gateway to all other Sacraments.

Talk to your priest about making your first confession and first Communion and being Confirmed.

Thank you both for this. No I haven’t had any preparation for receiving Holy Communion and not had first Communion. So I am guessing I am correct in sitting out at the moment?

Confirmation is not required to receive the Eucharist, but one must be in the state of grace (generally meaning having gone to confession if having a unabsolved mortal sin) and being instructed on the worthy reception of the Eucharist.

Speak to your pastor about getting you sacramentally back on track. Depending on your previous catechisis they might suggest reception of confirmation before the Eucharist from a catechetical standpoint versus a strictly sacramental ordering requirement.

You are correct in sitting out at the moment.
Please speak to your priest about what you need to do to become able to receive.
And thank you for your love and respect for the Eucharist, that you take the time to look into it before just going up to receive.
Good luck on your faith journey. Praying that the Holy Spirit is with you.

Please just wait until you speak to your priest. Your first Communion should be a beautiful, carefully prepared-for event. I will never forget mine, and the pure joy I felt when the Lord came to me for the first time in that little wafer. Make it a holy, sacred event. God bless you - you have a wonderful moment to anticipate!

My First Confession and First Holy Communion were more than 70 years ago for me, and I, too, remember them vividly.

After you get the scoop for your own situation from your priest, you’ll be on your way. Keep coming back for forum discussions, though! Sometimes we clarify 😇, and sometimes we “muddify” 🤣, which will give you more topics to discuss with your priest, and make you a better informed Catholic.

You can use the magnifying glass icon and follow the prompts to see what else has been said about archived topics over the years.

Best wishes to you!
