Please explain head Coverings for Women.

When did it become ok in the church for women not to wear head coverings. I don’t, but was recently asked this question from a woman who is from a Protestant church who do wear a head covering. I know that some women do in my community, from Apostolic women to Old Order Amish. I saw this also in churches in Europe. But why did it stop and when? How do I defend my not wearing it when scripture says to do so.
