Hello this is my first post. I am married and a while back I strayed from my faith and from my husband and was unfaithful. Not a day has gone by that I have not been burdened by immense guilt. I have regained my faith and have gone back to God and the church. I pray daily and I went to confession to confess my sins. I cried and cried at confession and my grief for my sins is great. I pray every day for God’s guidance and forgiveness but I feel there is something unpure about me now. It weighs heavily on me and I cannot seem to allow God to forgive me. I cannot more forward with any aspect of my life as it is always there day and night. The guilt of having strayed so badly is a burden hard to bear and is making me very depressed. I pray to God daily to help me get past this but I can’t seem to. I would be grateful of any help to move forward. Thank you

Hi , none of us our perfect and we are all impure we can only do our best and I know it feels sometimes that I’d hasn’t forgiven us but he has and it’s satan who wants you to remember your guilt and sins so try praying the rosary and take your mind of it and say no to the devil and he wicked ways which makes you have these thoughts , dont worry youll be fine !
Hope I have helped in some way and your in my prayers , have a good Christmas

The problem is that you can’t forgive yourself. Please speak to a priest or a therapist who is Catholic and works within Catholic values. God’s forgiveness you can count on but it’s also important that you learn to forgive yourself. None of us is perfect, we all sin and sometimes forgiving ourselves is the hardest part.

In the words of our Lord, “Go and sin no more.”

We are all frail human beings. Trust that the Lord has put away your sins.

Pray to the Apostle Saint Peter that you may have the grace to receive God’s forgiveness (which you already have received) into your heart. He, like you, strayed from his faith and worse, from his Savior! But Jesus knowing that Peter would be weak still loved him and still told him “That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Pray that the snares of the devil that is despair not trap you!

Let me give you this analogy:
Just like someone who got a broken leg will have much pain when the bone is reset and once the bone is healed, the cast is taken off and the leg is weak, & atrophied, even making walking painful at times. But you must keep on gently walking on it for it to be replenished to full strength (but be gentle to it; its still tender).
Once Jesus forgave you your soul was reset and healed in a flash, but still weak. But keep on praying and confessing (your new sins, not the old) and receiving communion. The Holy Spirit will work wonders on you if you ask Him to. Just be gentle with yourself; you’re still recuperating.

Remember, God loves you so much!

The posts are right about Satan. God forgets forgiven sins. That is the purpose of the sacrament of reconciliation. Focus on the love of God now that you are forgiven. Serve God in joy and happiness. Rejoice! He has relieved you of your burdens of sin.

Evil spirits want you to wallow in guilt and regress in despair. Doing so, increases the chance of future failures.

What you feel is normal but…it is a sin against hope to despair of your sins. What is done, is done. Jesus forgave you. Believe and hope in that. Learn to forgive yourself in the same way that Jesus has forgiven you of those sins.

Please return to your confessor and express your unwillingness to forgive yourself.

Catechism of the Catholic Church:

Need for Hope (2090)

Because man cannot fully respond to God’s love, he must hope that God will give him the capacity to live according to the commandments. Hope is the confident expectation of God’s blessings of this life and of eternal life. Therefore, hope fears to offend God and incur punishment.

Sins against Hope (2091-2092)

Two sins against hope are:

1.Despair - The person loses all hope of God’s forgiveness or his help in getting to heaven. This is against God’s goodness, justice, and mercy.

2.Presumption is committed by someone who trusts in his own power to save himself; or who presumes on God’s forgiveness without any need for repentance and good works.
