If you ask a lot of people within Judaism, it is the Jews and the land of Israel. The original Biblical extent of the promised land was larger than the current national boundary of Israel, if I’m not mistaken.

It’s debatable whether the promise is still valid. The covenant was conditional upon Israel’s faithfulness.

In the Christian dispensation, the ‘chosen people’ is everybody who believes, and the promise is for the eternal kingdom in the afterlife.

Why?

Who are God’s Chosen People? Are the Hebrews still God’s Chosen people? Why or why not? What exactly was the promise of the promised land and is it still valid? Why or why not? Is the promised land still the land in the Middle East? Why or why not?

Thank you. It is from this thread:

…because Yahweh God is not man to go back on His Word the Hebrews/Jewish people are still God’s Chosen People… it is interesting that as early as before the twelve sons (from whom the twelve tribes of Israel take their respective names) Yahweh God had already pointed to the Gentiles:
God said to him, ‘Your name is Jacob, but from now on you will be called not Jacob but Israel.’ Thus he came by the name Israel. (Genesis 35:10)
You will then say to Pharaoh, "This is what Yahweh says: Israel is my first-born son. (Exodus 4:22)
…and this relationship was innitiated with Abraham:
And you are no longer to be called Abram; your name is to be Abraham, for I am making you father of many nations. (Genesis 17:5)
…but Israel is not the only chosen people of God:
7 Be sure, then, that it is people of faith who are the children of Abraham. 8 And it was because scripture foresaw that God would give saving justice to the gentiles through faith, that it announced the future gospel to Abraham in the words: All nations will be blessed in you. 9 So it is people of faith who receive the same blessing as Abraham, the man of faith. (Galatians 3:7-9)

I shall bless those who bless you, and shall curse those who curse you, and all clans on earth will bless themselves by you.’ (Genesis 12:3)
That is, it is not by being children through physical descent that people become children of God; it is the children of the promise that are counted as the heirs. (Romans 9:8)
23 so that he may make known the glorious riches ready for the people who are the instruments of his faithful love and were long ago prepared for that glory. 24 We are that people, called by him not only out of the Jews but out of the gentiles too. (Romans 9:23-24)
Romans 9:1 through 11:32 explains this issue very comprehensively!

Hi Abba,
Who are God’s chosen people?
They are the people who will worship him, and him alone. They are the ones God seeks.
Are the Hebrews still God’s Chosen people? Why or why not?
Yes, they are – but not every Hebrew worships God alone (money, power, satan, scientific positivisim, etc.); and hence, not all Hebrews are his people.
What exactly was the promise of the promised land and is it still valid? Why or why not?
There have been various promises about land throughout the ages.
In Genesis 12, we have a promise of a land to Abraham and his posterity for the purpose of becoming a great nation. But, even in this first promise – all nations are to invoke Abraham’s name as a source of blessing.

Genes 12:4 “and in you all the nations of the earth shall find a blessing”.
or equivalently: “shall bless themselves in your name.”
Or again, Acts 3:25.

This promise, and subsequent ones, have a mild identity crisis – for the land promised belongs to Abraham’s descendants; and the promise was made before Israel ever came into being.

Consider: IF one really is the posterity of Abraham, then any promise of land which still belongs to Abraham – includes you.

The posterity of Abraham can be found in they physical descendants of Ishmael, Israel, and the Catholic Church – not to mention other people having Faith. (Many Jews converted to Christianity, and many Christians were converted to Moslems…)

In that sense, any promise of physical land – belongs to many peoples and nations; Not to just one.

— But as to the validity of the promise, itself, today;

I’m not sure; I’d have to read more scripture and carefully…

But – even if it were – Just because one is an heir, doesn’t mean there is enough to go around… such divisions of an inheritance are a matter of law.

There are, in any such circumstances both rights and duties.
And … I think today’s duties trump irreconcilable rights…
Is the promised land still the land in the Middle East? Why or why not?
The physical dirt which was Caanan is still there, yes.

But I think what you are really asking is, “has the physical promised land served its purpose” or “is the promise of physical land made to Abraham, or a later promise, still in effect to a particular ethnic group?”

I tend to think it’s the former; The promise was to achieve a purpose; to grow the people of Israel into a large nation.

Strictly speaking – Abraham himself, never really inherited this land: (Acts 7:5)

He walked it as a stranger; even though the promise was “to HIM” and his descendants;

Abraham’s portion was no more than a tomb for the afterlife; he owned not so much as a place to pitch his tent during his life.

Consider, Abraham the greatest of the promise – received nothing but a tomb. None the less, it’s the land after the grave which is truly important:

Hebrews 3 discusses the time when the people were restless in the desert; and wished to enter the promised land where they may rest their feet. The connection is not entirely obvious, but the “rest” is the seventh day – and the seventh day is the “sabbath”. And the number seven is also an “oath” (to seven, literally, is to swear in Hebrew.).

So, to a Catholic – the promised land on earth is not the important land to inherit; It is the land of rest found mentioned in the book of Hebrews.

The “Promosed land” was possession of the land of Canaan, which God promised to Abraham and his descendents. A map of the land of Canaan is here.

God made a threefold promise to Abraham. Different scholars order and name the promises differently, but in general, God promised, 1) posession of the land of Canaan, 2) a royal kingdom or mighty nation and, 3) woldwide blessing.

Promise of posession of the Land of Canaan

On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the Great River, the Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites. (Genesis 15:18-21)

Promise of a Royal Kingdom

Abram fell face down and God said to him: For my part, here is my covenant with you: you are to become the father of a multitude of nations. No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I am making you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fertile; I will make nations of you; kings will stem from you. (Genesis 17:3-6)

Promise of Worldwide Blessing

A second time the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven and said: “I swear by my very self—oracle of the LORD—that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your son, your only one, I will bless you and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants will take possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth will find blessing, because you obeyed my command. (Genesis 22:15-18)

These are the three covenant promises of God to Abraham.

The promise of land was fulfilled when Joshua crossed the Jordan River and Israel began to take posession of the land of Canaan. The promise of a royal kingdom was fulfilled when King David was established as king of Israel, and ultimately fulfilled in the Kingdom of Christ. The promise of worldwide blessing was fulfilled several times in part, especially when Alexander the Great saw Jerusalem and out of all the nations he conquered, Israel alone was allowed to continue it’s worship. The promise of worldwide blessing was ultimately fulfilled in Christ and his Church.

The St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology has a good lesson which covers the promises here.

Both of you are correct. (as I understand sacred scripture):

There is the literal promise of a literal place of the in-gathering of the literal chosen descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when Messiah comes to this earth.

There is the spiritual promise of a heavenly kingdom of the in-gathering of the spiritually chosen of the Messiah Jesus.

(my conjecture):

The two shall become one at the parousia, when the Shekinah glory cloud will be over restored earthly Jerusalem as the restored literal descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are gathered into the land.

Just as the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night was over the Israelites in the wilderness, so shall it be in the kingdom to come. (Isaiah 4:6) This Shekinah glory cloud will be the great cloud of witnesses of Jesus Christ and his church. For just as Jesus Christ ascended into heaven in the Shekinah glory cloud, so shall he return.

Death came into God’s creation through the envy of Satan, and the fall of Adam and Eve. Therefore, the literal restoration of creation as spoken by Isaiah the prophet, and by the apostle Paul must come to pass.

In Acts doesn’t it say that the prophet Moses spoke of was Jesus and that whoever did not listen to him would be cut off (from Israel)?

Yes, Jesus Christ is the prophet like unto Moses, and whoever does not heed his words which the Father gave him to speak will be judged. This is a warning to every
individual who hears the words of Jesus Christ and does not obey them… Jew or non-Jew.

St. Paul’s epistle to the church in Rome says that when the fulness of the Gentiles has come, then ‘all Israel will be saved’. Whether this is through the two witnesses, or by some other means of God’s divine mercy, it will come to pass.

**Who are God’s Chosen People? **

Jews.

God cannot reject his people for bad behaviour under any circumstance, the Jews could crucify the Messiah, rape and kill a baby a day, destroy the environment and turn to idolatry, they would STILL be his chosen people. As a nation its a question of “once saved always saved”.

What exactly was the promise of the promised land and is it still valid?

Yes, its that the Jews would have a homeland (their own country). I don’t think the church has fully revealed how this promise fits in with our eternal hope in heaven.

In Acts doesn’t it say that the prophet Moses spoke of was Jesus and that whoever did not listen to him would be cut off (from Israel)?
…not from Israel in the term of blood offsprings… but cut off the New Covenant: whoever denies the Son denies also the Father (St. John’s Epistle).
