I think that my apartment might be haunted. It sounds unlikely, but I live in the historical district of my town, and some weird things have been happening. I live above an antique store that has been having similar problems.

When I come home from work I find all my cabinets’ and closets’ doors open. I don’t leave them open. I have so many broken china dishes, when they’re just left in the cupboard and there’s just no way I can think of them breaking. At night I’ll hear a child’s laugh–I live alone!!! Once in a while I’ll wake up to heavy footsteps and I feel as if I can’t breathe and it gets so cold when that happens. Every few nights I swear that I’ll see a little girl running down my hall.

My grandmother, a superstitious Hungarian woman, suggested that I leave flour on the floor by my doorway to see if any footsteps would be shown. Sure enough, it looked like heavy work-boots walked right into and out of my bedroom.

I do not know what to do!!! Please help me!!! My lease is for another six months and my landlord won’t let me out of it. Who do I go to? Or what prayer should I say??? Will the St. Michael Prayer of Defense work???

Thanks a bunch xoxox

Ring the police. I hate to scare you but I think you must report this and update your home security, locks, cameras, dog, etc

Who owns the antique store and who has access to your flat , or keys to it

I like using blessed salt, but if you have trouble, you might try some holy water, or getting your priest to bless your apartment.

Get into the habit of saying prayers for the people who lived there before you, whenever you happen to think of them.

Ironically enough this is posted on halloween. ha!

That’s creepy though. However, I’m not one to believe in hauntings. I believe in spirits in the sense of those in purgatory and demons and such, but haunting even from a demon stance doesn’t make sense. Fear? Yes Satan does that, but just simple scaring doesn’t make sense as it isn’t furthering your stance from God.

Pray, yes. I would be more afraid of the person sneaking in. Something like this sounds like some sort of prank a kid might do for the fun of it. As Rose said, I’d change the locks, report to the police, etc. Do you have any friends you could stay with, or could stay with you?

I’m not sure how you would sleep, if it were me and it happened constantly but did nothing to me physically, I’d stake out one night to see who was doing it. As for waking up not breathing and cold, I think that would happen in any fearful situation.

I’ll pray for you, but my best guess is that someone is pulling a prank; a emotionally harmful one. Easiest thing to do first I think would be to switch the locks- a landlord should not have any issue with that. Even so, you can always change it back, but just see if switching helps. This is all happening when you come home, after being at work. The stuff at night could be someone, or possibly partial imagination/dreams.

.
It would be good to ask the parish priest to bless your apartment. Such blessing of domiciles are routine for Catholic priests.
It would also be good to get some holy water. Many parishes keep it in the vestibule of the church for people to take. Then you could use it in the area of concern.
You also should consider an intruder, though perhaps this is unlikely if it happens frequently.

Yes, pray it. Pray the Litany of Saints and use blessed water or blessed salt. Have a priest bless the home.

I know because I have been in that kind of situation before

Also pray for those ghosts. They maybe trapped souls in a Purgatory state and need prayers to enter heaven. It is now the month of All Souls. A perfect time to pray for the dead.

Spirits don’t leave footprints in flour. Go to the police

Actually demons can if they are being crafty.
But yes, police is a good option too

I think we should be careful in giving advice that just assumes it’s actually supernatural. That seems like the much less likely possibility. Exhaust the normal explanations first.

If not spiritual:

Buy a fireproof safe ($30-$40 at target and walmart) and put the keys on your keychain. Inside, place your checkbooks and ID’s, anything with banking account numbers and narcotic drugs if you take any.

Check the inside of your doorway for breaks or fragments of wood taken from someone attempting to pry the door open. Talk to your landlord and ensure there was a fresh doorknob + lock set put in before you moved in there.

Check outside for ladders and make sure your windows are opening and closing normally, if someone forced their way in, they will not operate as new.

Check garbage cans and neighbors garbage cans for open bags spilled out to rule out animals. Missing soda/beer cans and bottles indicate homeless persons instead of wildlife.

Perform an accountability check for expensive computer hardware in storage (not commonly used) and check CD/DVD cases for anything tangible which may be missing.

(spiritual response coming up!) first think practically…

What did the landlord say when you said the place is haunted and you want to move out?

I am not buying it. Human origins. And this person needs to take this seriously and GO to THE POLICE

Great point; some previous owner has the keys, Get the locks changed and call the cops.

That was my thought when I was responding, but wanted to give the OP the benefit of the doubt!

I was skeptical as I mention, it was posted on Halloween-- a bit suspicious…

Just speaking from some things of experience.
But yes police first to rule out the natural first.
