Here’s something proactive & yet so simple that you can do for the culture of life!👍

The American Academy of FertilityCare Professionals is petitioning the National Center for Health Statistics (Centers for Disease Control) to change the ICD - 9-CM codes to more accurately reflect the services provided by FertilityCare Professionals and to help obtain third party reimbursement for services.

The ICD - 9 -CM codes (used in the insurance industry for reimbursement) do not include natural methods of birth regulation as a specific form of managment. Codes related to contraception ( V25.09 and V26.4) have been used in the past with varying degrees of acceptance.

The Billings Ovulation Method, Creighton Model FertilityCare System, Standard Days Method, Two-Day Method and the Sympto-thermal Method are all currently provided on a national and international level in hospitals and out patient clinics.

We need public (name removed by moderator)ut to help convince the CDC ( National Center for Health Statistics) to create new codes for natural methods of birth regulation that will include counseling and instruction, follow up surveillance and procreative management. Comments from the public will only be accepted until December 4, 2006.

If we want NFP and FertilityCare to be mainstreamed - this would be a good start. A letter writing campaign is a small way to help make a difference. Letters from organizations always will gain more attention from the government.

Please join us in this effort. You can also find more information on this website: www.aafcp.org. Here is a sample letter written by one of the members of the Philadelphia NFP network (and member of the CMA).

Dear Ms. Fisher:
I understand that there needs to be a specific code in the ICD-9 coding system for natural family planning services. The current codes for contraceptive management are not accurate for the services provided by Natural Family Planning Instructors and FertilityCare Practitioners. I am also aware that there are no adequate codes for continued follow up instruction in natural methods of birth regulation.
I strongly support the proposed change to the ICD-9-CM coding system which would modify the V25 and V26 codes to recognize natural family planning. I would very much appreciate your efforts to move forward wit this change to that natural family planning services can be recognized in the medical insurance billing world as the highly scientific and effective methods that they are—with much documentation to that extent in the medical literature.
Sincerely,
