Please HELP with me this! How can I get it through to him?

My next door neighbor is methodist and continues to throw catty remarks out about the church in our e-mails no matter what the issue is. He said there is a high percentage of Popes that were gay. I responded by telleing him he has no proof and followed up with this; my writing is in blue his reponse is in red.
Why do the Methodist blasphemy the Eucharist by making it symbolic. There you go again, revealing your ignorance. All churches are “dwindling in numbers,” at least all Christian churches. The only ones “growing” are the supposedly non-denominational mega-churches, which are really just shifting people from more traditional churches. Nobody, short of Christ Himself, “made it” (communion) symbolic. It always has been, and there’s NO Biblical basis for transubstantiation. The Last Supper story never says Jesus slashed His wrist and poured His blood in the cup, nor that he chopped off any fingers and fed them to the disciples. It was symbolic then, and continues to be. Why do you make such a big deal out of it? It isn’t one. Also, if it changes substance, why does it matter if you use wine, or gasoline? I have received communion in plenty of Catholic and Episcopal churches, and I know wine when I taste it. (I am sure some blasphemous priest will smoke a turd in Hell for serving me.) You can’t have the Real Presence because you do not have Holy Orders in your church. Again with the ignorance, we do. The fact that the orders are not from the Pope is meaningless. We get our orders from a higher authority. You are an offshoot and have a broken link, it’s called “Apostolic Succession”. Also known as “nepotism” and “in-breeding.” That’s why there has historically been such a high incidence of mental illness among Popes and bishops. You seem to get a kick out of throwing the Church out there at any given opportunity. No, I just enjoy jerking your chain. I never say anything bad to anyone about your church but be careful because I do have some pretty strong opinions about protestants and their beliefs and yes that includes mainstream prots. Yeah, I sort of feel the same way about Bloody Mary and your papal warlords and their Crusades.
 
Ouch. Send him an email telling him you are having a mass said for him and you will be offering a novena of rosaries in reparation for his blasphemies. 🙂 Maybe that will quiet him up a bit. If not, I’m with the previous poster: block emails and cease contact.
 
If he is bothering you that greatly (such that you border on losing your temper or think malevolent thoughts), you should stop contact immediately. Intentionally placing yourself in the near occasion of sin is hazardous to your soul.

But…if you’re feisty like me, you might offer the following challenge:

You claim that the Lord’s Supper is only symbolic. I’m willing to listen. If you can prove to me from the Bible that the Eucharist is only symbolic, I’ll walk away from the Catholic Church today and never look back. Further, I’ll stand shoulder to shoulder with you at Sunday worship for as long as you’ll have me and never go to mass again…

…HOWEVER…

If I can show you that it’s not symbolic, would you be willing to do the same in return?

Do not engage in arguement with this person. He or she will not listen and is only doing this to rile you up.

And is suceeding.
 
The attacks on the Church are totally without charity. He seems like he’s being very insecure and defensive. If he was realy secure in his notions of protestantism he would be kind and attempting to bring you out of your decieved state. Ask him why God would allow 20,000 different versions of his truth to be put into the world increasing confusion. I have yet to get a real protestant answer to this question. A good father only tells one version of the truth. Jesus himself stated that a house divided will fall.

And he called you the ignorant one? He doesnt understand the concept behind Transubstantiation. Ask him why he thinks disciples of Christ walked away from him if all Christ was teaching was a “symbolic” communion? Christ was present at the Last supper in two ways. He was physically present and he was sacramentally present, as He still is (sacramentally) today inside Catholic Churches with the Eucharist. Is it a mystery how Christ can be present in two different ways at once? Sure. Anymore of a mystery than asking God to make you into a new Creation? Or how God could become man and die for our sins? Just becasue he cannot understand Transubstantiation does not make it any less true. Ask him to explain the trinity or the divinity of Christ and see how well he grasps those concepts.

He has eaten and drank judgement on himself then; “Therefore whoever eats the bread and drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. . . . For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself” (1 Cor. 11:27, 29).

Another point. How does someone eat and drink judgement on themselves by eating bread and drinking wine? Unless…

I agree! This guy is not rational, IMHO.

Also, as a Methodist myself, I can tell you that what he is saying is contrary to the teachings of the Methodist faith…In fact, its far enough off, for me to feel comfortable in calling it heretical.

As I say: not rational; out for trouble; insulting not only your beliefs but those of his own church.

Drop him like the hot potato that he is. Please! This is not a good person to be in contact with. In fact, he sounds more than a little scary.

How old is this person? Tell him you won’t talk religion with him again until he can grow up and drop the name-calling and childish insults.
 
This person is not interested in discourse. You can’t get it through to him. He is determined to live not in the world of today but in the world of Bloody Mary (but not, of course, in the world of Bloody Henry or Bloody Elizabeth – oh, I forgot, the victors make up the names).
 
This guy doesn’t even sound like a Christian of any kind. He shows no love whatsoever and he doesn’t seem to be interested in genuinely discussing the issue. In fact, he sounds nearly hateful. He simply wants to rock your boat and possibly tip it over. I would cease contact and just pray for him…

I really don’t think he’s going to grasp anything you say at all, but I would point out John 6 and leave it at that.

Well, we all know that any time an individual Catholic sins, the Church herself is in full support of it, right? If this person hates Mary I so much, I wonder how he feels about Elizabeth I, who had her own cousin executed. Or Henry VIII, who had two wives executed. Oh, and those two also had many Catholics killed as well.

I went to a Methodist Church during my High School years. He does not sound like any Methodist I ever met.

Remind your “friend” that Henry VIII and Elizabeth I had nearly 100,000 catholics executed because, well, they were Catholic. Mary I got the name “Bloody Mary” because she had 300 protestants executed while attempting to return England to Roman Catholicism.

If Mary I was “Bloody”, then what does that make Henry VIII and Elizabeth?:rolleyes:
 
While his answers sound childish and uninformed, your portions are not exactly dripping with charity either… I’d suggest stepping back, maybe point this guy to an internet group full of strangers - there he can have discussions and you all can stay friendly neighbors.
