I think I’m really depressed. I’ve been feeling the same, or worse, for a few months now. I cry every night, and my thoughts are dark. I feel like I could get hit by a bus tomorrow and no one could care.

I’ve asked for prayers here:forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=262481. But I want to know if anyone has any suggestions for me? I really don’t know what to do. I’m not very good at expressing myself, but I feel like my depression is getting worse. Maybe some of you remember me, I wrote some months ago about a breakup with a man that I didn’t understand why he broke us up. We were best friends, nothing dramatically wrong… but anyways… those issues, plus more that have started to crop up, are really taking its toll.

But I don’t know, maybe some of you have ideas how to move on or just feel a little better…

Hi,
I’m really sorry that you’re feeling so bad. I suffer from depression myself and have found that a combination of the right medication, right living and surrender to God works for me.

I’d suggest that you talk to a Dr or a therapist. Depression can be a real, clinical illness and as such sometimes it needs treating like any other illness with the right medication. Many people find that a short course of antidepressants are enough to recover.

In addition, you should spend some time in prayer, surrendering how you feel to God and remembering that He is always with us and will never abandon us. There are lots of Bible passages that are helpful. I particularly like and rely on: Psalms 143 and 139, Matt: 12 v26-30 and John:8 v12.

I also try and say the Rosary or the Chaplet of Divine Mercy everyday, especially when overwhelmed by negative thoughts and go to Mass when I’m well enough (I have a serious heart problem, despite being relatively young).

Although its tempting, don’t avoid others and drop your activities. Its important to get out and spend time around other people, even if you don’t feel like it.

God loves you and you are in my prayers.

Karen

Dear, you are doing something right in reaching out. I hope that we can help you feel less unloved. Do you imagine we can ever forget you now? I shall not, and will continue to hope that those who give you advice (and all who pray for you) will be the rope to pull you out of the lake of tears.

Some depression can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain or by fluctuations in hormone levels…You really do need to visit your doctor.
Pray to St Dymphna who is the patroness of those with emothional illness see nationalshrinestdymphna.org

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I agree with posts above about seeing a doctor, especially if your depression onsought was sudden and uncharacteristic for you. ON the other hand, one thing that can certainly help (whether clinically depressed or not), is to reach outside of yourself and go be loving to others… you will feel better about yourself if you are helping and useful to others. For ex, f you have family members nearby, call them up, bake a cake and bring it to them, visit them, help them with some errand, task, household project, etc, just out of the goodness of your heart and ask for nothing in return. Or, this could be formal volunteer work (check your church, library, nearest old-folks home), or even taking a walk and be friendly and cheerful, striking up a conversation with a person walking a dog, or someone else that looks like they need a kind word (obviously, be careful around children–these days, we unfortunately must all be so careful not to be accused of something nafarious!). I am amazed at how if I go out running my errands and I just smile when I meet the bank teller, or the grocery story clerk how friendly people are in return… Your mood change can and should start with YOU getting outside of your “pity party” (excuse the term, but you know what I mean… Jesus asks us to focus on others, not ourselves!), and put yourself out for others… You ARE Loved by God most of all… ! He calls us to LOVE OURSELVES but to the same extent that we LOVE OTHERS… what love have you shown others lately? Something to try, at the very least…

Hi sweetie, I’m really sorry you’re feeling so down at the moment, it doesn’t sound like much fun at all! I will certainly pray for you :).
You must miss your ex a lot… but honestly, the very best thing you can do is to keep yourself busy so that you don’t have the opportunity to think about him so much. Gradually that pain will get so much better! I agree with gloraykid that one of the best things you could do right now would be to get ‘outside yourself’ through some kind of positive action in the world… assuming this is possible for you, why not choose some kind of volunteer work you would enjoy and do it for a few hours, a couple of times a week? The worst thing you could do would be to cut yourself off from the world, even though I’ll bet that’s what you feel like doing). I’ve been there so I know.
Another suggestion I would make is, take some exercise. This has been proven as a huge help in beating depression because of all the lovely seratonin that gets released. Maybe start off with something very manageable like just a 20 min daily walk somewhere nice near where you live.
I would definitely suggest going to the doctor as well though as, as helpful as these things are sometimes a short course of anti-depressants really can be a miracle cure. It just helps you to get back to feeling normal when you can’t seem to do that yourself.

I hope you are surrounded by good friends and family who are looking after you? Again, make sure you don’t cut yourself off from human contact

Sending prayers your way,👍
Sarah

I agree with others, see a doctor for an evaluation, they have a simple series of questions that help with diagnosis…

Also, consider taking daily B complex vitamin. It can help keep things in balance emotionally.

Lord Jesus,

Please help this young woman, ‘Needsprayers’… hold her in your loving arms and bring her through this, loosen the hold of depression and sadness on her mind and bring her into joyful times. Fill her life with many blessings and wipe her tears away.

Amen

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee, Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of ourt death. Amen

I agree with others - go to a doctor and get evaluated.

And - yes, ask St. Dymphna to intercede for you. She did for me!

Praying for you,

Ruthie

For the mean time try going to adoration. I had a time frame where I was sad ALL the time. I discovered the intense amount of peace I experienced there with Jesus. I would stay as long as it took to feel better. 20 minutes to 4 hours. I continued this everyday and now am committed to once a week. Its been my medication…

God Bless

I’ll keep you in my prayers. I second what everyone else is saying about not cutting yourself off from people, even if this is the time you feel like completely retreating from the world. Do you have family or friends you can lean on for support? I would agree if life continues to seem unbearable, please seek advice from a doctor. I have clinical depression myself, and went through a very rough patch about 3 years ago.

I have no friends… and I’m not really close to my family that way…

I have thought about seeing someone, but it would be something my family would get embarrassed about, as well as me… I don’t know if I can, anyways… plus money, I don’t have any extra… school takes it all…

I agree with all the things the other people posted.

In addition to those, I recommend that you use this lonely time to develop a closer friendship with God. Learn some new prayers or devotions (I recommend the liturgy of the hours). Go for a walk in nature and ‘invite Jesus to come along’ and spend time in prayer with him on your walks. Or other activities like riding a bike. Spend time meditating, and think of it as spending time with your best friend, God. And ask Him why your life is like this, and for help in dealing with it, and for advice on how to get out of the rut you’re in. Make something good come out of this lonely time.

Also can you maybe find someone to give you spiritual direction?

I’ll be praying for you too.
God Bless

Edit: Maybe its best to meditate along with the rosary or bible readings instead to guide your thoughts so that you focus on different aspects instead of the sad things. Sorry I should have mentiond that before

Our dear sad friend,
I wish you would talk to your family and not worry about embaressment. If you had a sister who is going through what you are, would you want her to keep it to herself and suffer alone? Why would you do that to yourself, if you wouldn’t to your sister?

Your family, if they are embaressed by such things would be embaressed if you fall apart due to this depression. It will get worse unless you get out from under.

Are you sure they look down on emotional and mental exhaustion? Is any other kind of physical sickness more acceptable? I just want you to think about this beacuse for there to be sickness or some breakdown in our brain or our body, it’s just human. We’re just human.

Physical sickness can be embaressing as many people know. For me, it’s often embaressing when I’m out with others. Because I’m Celiac I can’t have anything with wheat, or any grain but rice, at celebrations, I have to not share in the birthday cakes, for Mass, I have to put the priest to the trouble of a special low-gluten host. It’s a fuss because people sometimes make an issue of it, and because I don’t want to be a bother. I don’t have a choice about hiding my illness because I’d be very sick if I ignore it. You have a right to embaress your family by seeking help, because your problem is as real and human as mine and
many others.

Please don’t fail to seek practical help from your family because you think they’d be embaressed. They love you.

You’ve got yourself into a hole because it’s devastating to lose someone you love and maybe your self-esteem isn’t very healthy …yet. Either you get help, and you can’t alone because of finance and/or else you begin more to think of little ways you can make others’ lives more pleasant, and come out of yourself, looking outward more than looking inward at how miserable you are. You may not realise that other people pick up our negative signals and dislike of self, and why would they like us if we don’t!
But you are a beautiful valuable person and if I were there I’d do anything I could to get you over all this! :coffee: :coffee:

My intentions are loving, but realistic. I’ve been through a lot of sadness and loss in my life, so know how it feels. I just want you to seek healthy ways to recover, and to begin to enjoy the gift of yourself and your life. Please God you will. Have you noticed that there are a number of people who are taking your needs very seriously and giving you time and love on this forum!

With love and prayer, Trishie
