if i may make a suggestion.

say the rosary… while you are saying the rosary pull up on your computer a picture of the mystery you are focusing on and stare at it throughout the whole 10 hail mary’s.

Dear Joey, that happened to me, years ago.
The morning I came back to the Church, after ten years of seaching for Him…I had no idea when I got out of bed and did everything I needed to do to ready my husband for work and my three boys for school, that this particular day I would suddenly return to the Church.

I know how awful it is to seek for God and not even know if He exists. I’ll send you my story in Private messages if you wish.

Warmly, Trishie

What do you mean by not believing in God?

It sounds like this is more a matter of emotion than intellectual, but I can’t really tell. Whatever it is… Here is one sign that God is with you…

God is good, He is absolutely good, and without God no one can do or desire anything good at all. For Christians this goes even further, with our baptism we gain supernatural graces – the ability to do virtuous things for the sake of God in ways no other people can… these supernatural acts of charity are too further signs of God’s graces.

So… whenever God feels farther from you, the very desire for God – His goodness, is the sign that He is within you. The more you desire Him, the more He is with you, for the desire for God is a great good – a great good from God.

Instead of despairing from that desire, or misunderstanding it, one is to take it for what it is – a good, a longing, a calling to pursue God, to gain Him, to come closer to Him.

How do you do this? To do this… one gives up sin, and devotes oneself to virtuous works for the love of God and prayer. 🙂 Prayer especially. One makes acts of faith – and submits to His pleasure as to whether He will reveal Himself in some further way or not to you.

The devils try to drive us to despair and twist our emotions, this battle is for our growth. We must try to control our emotions and turn them to what they should properly be for the sake of ourselves and God. 🙂

Have faith! You will receive consolation. . But do not let your own misguided heart get in the way of such consolation… give of yourself… then the road will start to show rays of light.

**Act of Hope
**from the Small Roman Missal

Since Thou vouchsafest to come and dwell within me, O my Redeemer! What may I not expect from Thy bounty! I therefore present myself before Thee with that lively confidence which Thine infinite goodness inspires. Thou not only knowest all my wants, but Thou art also willing and able to relieve them. Thou hast not only invited me, but also promised me Thy gracious assistance: “Come to Me all ye that labour and are burdened, and I will refresh you.” Behold, then, O Lord, I accept of Thy gracious invitation; lay before Thee all my wants, my misery, and my blindness, and confidently hope, without the fear of being disappointed, that Thou wilt enable me to persevere, unto the end of my life, in Thy service. “In Thee, O Lord, have I hoped; I shall not be confounded forever.”

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; he maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in paths of righteousness for his name sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

An Act of Love
from the Small Roman Missal

As the hart panteth after the fountains of water, so my soul panteth after Thee, O God! “My soul hath thirsted after the strong, living God; when shall I come and appear before the face of God?” “For what have I in heaven? And besides Thee, what do I desire on earth?” Let blind and infatuated worldlings intoxicate themselves with the false, transient, and fading happiness of this life; for my part, nothing besides Thyself can content me, either in heaven or on earth. Come then, O Thou Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world! Come, Thou beloved of my heart! Adorable Flesh and precious Blood of my Saviour! Come, to nourish, comfort, and enliven my sickly soul. O God of my heart! Let me neither love, seek, nor think of any other object but Thyself alone; for Thou alone art my consolation, my treasure, my joy, my life, my all!

“My heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God… Thou art, O Lord of hosts! My King and my God!” “Who will give me wings like a dove and I will fly and be at rest!”

Joey, I understand how you get so burned by the tough times that you can lose faith in God.

My memory of the Mount Isa sky is of bright stars in the darkness that gave no reply. Many times I called out in my heart to a God I did not know existed, and if God did not, how could God answer? I would cry out past the edge of my being saying: “Power of Goodness and Love, if You exist, love Yourself in me.” “I can’t find You. Please find Yourself to me.

I was intending to give you a lot of time but I may have to leave it until later, as my husband wishes us to go grocery shopping now. Please know I will come back to you when I can, and will share what I can, hoping it may help…but mostly by Private Messaging.
In the meantime you’re in my thoughts and prayers.

Warm regards, Trishie

I think all of us go through many periods and trials of not “feeling” God is with us. Open your mind heart and soul to Him. Stop questioning why He isn’t with you. He is. He has never allowed one sparrow to fall from the nest without an awareness of that fall. Pray as though you believe. Stop asking Jesus to come to you, you must go to Him.

You don’t feel that God exists, I got news for you, God does exist in reality, that’s outside you and me. God exists more truly than the continent of North America exists.
We cannot feel God’s presence all the time and we should be thankful, because God’s presence is tremendously upsetting to us ordinary sinners. We cannot feel grace either. but it’s there just like the oxygen in the air.

Often there are no intellectual problems to accept God’s existence but moral problems, “if there is a God why did this happen to me?” “If there is a God he would be so understanding that he would not condemn me for keeping on sinning and he would not put any demands on me…” God loves you infinitely but he also wants your love in return.🙂

Open yourself up to God’s grace by conversion and prayer.

Convert and believe the gospel!

That you are looking to get God back into your life shows you how close He really is to you.

Hang in there. You are moving in the right direction. Keep in mind that when the devil sees someone beginning a conversion he unleashes on them. This happened to me when I was converted. Literally “all hell broke loose” and I was attack by (mainly family) from all sides. Any attacks now will actually be good for you in the end, even though it doesn’t seem like it at the time.

Regarding the retreat, I hope and pray that the retreat you are going on is the one I am going on in April (somewhere about 1.5 hours from Little Rock, AR?). That is an excellent retreat and will do great good for your soul.

For some reason, God has decided to draw you to Himself. That is the explanation for why you “want” to believe. Conversion is a process. The most important thing now is to continue to pray (just simply talk to God in your own words. Tell him what you are going through, and ask Him to help you; remain calm; and not do anything rash). Be patient, persist in your calling out to God, and He will respond in His time - and His time will probably be on the retreat.

Actually, he is already responding to you by giving you the desire that you have. Your proper response is to continue to act on this desire by praying and calling out to God. Do you see how it works? God begins the process by giving us a desire for Himself. With this desire we begin to call out to Him , and then he responds to us again, and so on. This process actually continues (but on a deeper level) all throughout the spiritual life. Right now you desire to know God. This desire in itself comes from God. Once you have a strong faith, you will desire something more, such as to overcome your sins and rise in perfection, which desire itself also comes from God. As God reveals your imperfections to you, and simultaneously implants the desire to over come them, you, who have become aware of this or that imperfection, will again cry out to God to help you in this area. As this sin, or fault, is overcome, he will reveal more to you and so on. This is the process of the spiritual life. You are at the beginning.

We will all do our best to help you work through this. Don’t bother yourself with the doctrinal and theological discussions that we have hear. Save that for later. For now, post all of your spiritual questions and let us try to help. I’m glad to have met you and will certainly be praying for you.

Lastly, if you are going to the FSSP retreat put on by Fr. Gordon out of Little Rock, AR, let me know.

all you have to do is accept jesus into your life as your lord and savior and you want to commit your lif to him by denying yourself and your own passions, by taking up the cross and following him. then you will be reborn in christ. god is real he hears you so do not worry he is there for you have no fear he loves you.

Read the books:

What’s So Great About Christianity by Dinesh D’Souza and
Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis

Try some Pascal as well…

And of course the New Testament!

I went through the same thing. I know exactly what’s happening, keep praying. God is pulling you closer to Him this is the purgatoral pains, the roots are being formed it is painful & confusing. Everytime you become full of fear & doubt, tell God you surrender to His Will and keep saying aspirations throughout the day…Jesus I Trust In You. Pray the Rosary and spiritual communions. If you can get to more Masses then go & go to confession. Going to confession really opened the door for me-what a relief it was. Also, you are going against the grain of what you are used too…God wants you to live according to the Spirit-not the flesh. Pray and try not to worry…He is gentle, kind, merciful and very patient. Practice gratitude towards God…it does wonders…start at the small things, make a gratitude list.

Have you gone to confession since then?

It’s a trap to think that you must “feel” something; that you must “experience” God in order to know that he is there. God may allow a sensible devotion sometimes but it’s not required and he has saw fit to leave many a Saints in an emotional desert.

My friend-

There have been some great replies here. I only wish I had something that could make you feel more connected to God.

I do think Lent and the approach of the Triduum and your searching and prayer are not a coincidence for you. Pls try to accept your suffering and use it to bring you closer to Jesus.

Listen rather than talk during your prayers. And, listen for God in your everyday life. Believe. He IS there!

Also, I could not agree more to the recommendation of praying the Rosary. This, for me, has been a most powerful tool for connecting to God. Ask the Blessed Virgin to pray for you and intercede for you.

our Lord is calling you. that is why you have the desire to believe in Him.

Pray this: Eternal and Mercyfull God open my eyes and ears, i want to see and hear the Truth, i dont want to be deceived and give Him thanks for hearing your plead. pray this all day and daily.

May our Lord be with you always.
