I was wondering if someone could possibly shed some light on the meaning of Galations 5:2-3 which says2 It is I, Paul, who am telling you that if you have yourselves circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3. Once again I declare to every man who has himself circumcised that he is bound to observe the entire law. This has gotten me worried as circumcision is a common medical practice today, but is done without the persons being circumcised consent. I was just confused as to how all of this fits in. The context is critical … Look at 5:1 … the Yoke of Slavery is a reference to a few early Christians insistence on following precisely older Mosaic Law with the Burdensome ceremonial requirements in contrast to the freedom of Jesus Christ. Acts 15:10 has similar language. So Paul is critical of some early christian emphasis on old requirements instead of freedom that comes from Jesus. There is nowhere in scripture that Paul says he has problems with the concept of circumcision itself, he just had trouble in the context of Jewish christian converts imposing these burdens on gentile christian converts when it was completely unnecessary for salvation. Jesus was circumcised, so Paul would not have any issue circumcision directly.
