I am coming up on my second anniversary of entering the Church, I was on fire for Christ. I go to mass on Sundays, and I still usher. However I use to pray the Rosary daily, the Divine Mercy Chaplet daily, and other prayers daily.

I ask for suggestions on what to do. I went to confession when I went on retreat a few weeks ago. I thought after going on the retreat I would be reset for the Church. I left feeling great, days after I stopped doing my prayers. I will take any suggestion or advice! Please, I beg you.

Hi Seth,

Sometimes I think that we can overwhelm ourselves when first starting out with something, where we give ourselves so much to do in our excitement for it.

I don’t know if this happened in your case or not, but sometimes this overwhelming feeling can cause us to just stop everything because we can then feel like we just won’t be able to keep up, so we just stop everything.

This is what happens to me, sometimes. It comes from a place of anxiety for me, where I can tend to feel overwhelmed.

I think that the better way to do things then is to just take things in small amounts, a little bit at a time.

What I would do would be to just add in some prayers that you know that you can do, regarding your schedule.

If you can fit in the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, then I would do that, for example, or whatever prayer/prayers that you would like to do.

Please don’t make yourself feel guilty, but rather, just do the best that you can. 🙂

God bless you, and welcome to CAF!

Prayers said for you, and your intentions.

I actually went to a retreat a few days ago as well, at this enormous Jesus fest called ICYC. Loved it 🙂

Anyways, I had fallen into depression before it over my sinfulness. But I really felt God’s love through adoration, and so I have decided to spend more time in the chapel at my school since, and it has helped me tremendously. I was feeling spiritually dry too.

What am I getting at?

GO. TO. ADORATION.

It’ll feel weird at first. Us teens are so used to having tiny attention spans, but I have learned, and I learn again each time I go, time spent sitting and thinking and talking with Jesus is time WELL spent. Even if you just sit and daydream the first time, but persist, and go again, you will see a difference in your life.

A note: Don’t seek feeling good. One saint said something that I have written in my wallet, but I forget which saint said it. It says “Don’t worry about emotions when praying. Emotions are nothing”. Emotion can be useful, but just because we don’t FEEL God while say, going to classes, doesn’t mean he is ANY less present than when we are at a youth retreat.

I hope my garbled ramblings helped 🙂 Keep on! 👍

Thanks Brother! Adoration is one of my favorites, I need to frequent it more!

I am no expert, but, in conjunction with others’ advice, I’ve found the Fatima Prayer to be a very succinct and effective prayer. I will pray for you.

Thanks Bill! I have that prayer written down. I will pull it out!

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Hey Seth!🙂 I like and agree with what all the other posters have said, and in addition to what’s been said, I want to strongly second therese14’s suggestion. When I first read Thérèse of Lisieux’s autobiography Story of a Soul it had a hugely rejuvenating and inspiring effect upon me. At the time I really felt similar to how you describe yourself in your original post, and I was completely shocked that I related so strongly to a nineteenth century French nun - that seemed highly improbable to me, and it caught me by surprise. But she gave me exactly the kind of help I needed. I recommend taking a chance and trying her book. You could check out a copy from the library.

Praying for you.

I will pray for you. As far as advice goes, I would say, focus less on “praying” to God, and concentrate on talking to Him. Rote prayer, while beautiful and useful, can begin to wear on people the more they say it, and if one isn’t careful, it can become pointless. Spend time in silence, thinking nothing except on God. Start a journal to Him. Focus on beating a particular recurring sin. One does not have to be blazing for God to be in love with Him; don’t be afraid. It may be a dark night of the soul, or, ya know, you’re like me and not a saint yet, haha! But still, start small, and don’t be afraid of not being “on fire”; embers work their way up to being flames.
