The Central American Republic of Nicaragua is holding elections today, and former communist dictator Daniel Ortega is likely to emerge the “winner.” Note I put “winner” in quotation marks.
The reason is that Ortega may “win” the election by default, not by a majority of the Nicaraguan people voting for him.
65% of Nicaraguans polled in recent weeks have indicated that they will be voting against Ortega and FOR noncommunist candidates. Make no mistake, the majority of the Nicaraguan electorate is going to vote against communist Daniel Ortega.
The problem though, is that a change to Nicaraguan election law requires that to win, a candidate needs only to receive 35% of the actual votes cast. If other candidates individually receive less that 35%, then the candidate with 35% wins by default.
Ortega has about 35% support among voters, and the antiCommunists have about 65% support. Tragically, this 65% antiCommunist electorate is split between THREE different candidates. Please pray for Nicaragua. A return to communism under Ortega would be terrible.
Yet, regardless of the outcome, if Ortega wins, please offer a Chaplet of the Divine Mercy to Jesus for Ortega’s conversion.
That could mitigate the disaster of having him win this election.
