I’m in high school and one of my classmates is going through a really tough time. He’s a high functioning alcoholic (although the ‘functioning’ part is debatable, he’s just not turning up to school blind drunk all the time like he did last year), he occasionally experiences periods of homelessness and just the other day he was arrested for possession and distribution of drugs. He’s been involved in other petty crime too and he’s been to juvenile detention before for (I think it was) pulling a knife on someone at school. (I’m not justifying it but I just want to add that as serious as that is, there is more to the story, the other guy had raped a 7th grader and my friend had tried reporting him to the police but nothing ended up happening and so he ended up getting into a fight with the rapist).
I really worry about him, he’s headed down a really dark path and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in (real) jail for his senior year (we’re in the middle of year 11 now and he turns 18 in a few months, so if he commits another crime after that he’ll be out of the youth justice system). It makes me so sad because despite his issues he really isn’t a bad guy. He’s kind and funny and he’s the only person who helped me out and most certainly the only one who was friendly to me when I first moved to this school and didn’t know anybody.
He’s also a militant atheist and I tried introducing him to the faith but he laughed it off. He isn’t disrespectful to me because of my Catholicism (which is more than I can say for a lot of other people) but he’s very into scientific materialism and doesn’t believe in God at all.
Please pray for him, to overcome his issues with drugs and alcohol, to turn his life around before he screws it up really badly and of course to come home to the Church.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us,
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our deaths. Amen.
