Please pray for my son who died by suicide and wasn't Catholic

We are not Catholic and we were all raised as Baptists, however, for about a year and a half I’ve come to know and trust the Catholic faith (just a bit). Unfortunately, I can’t convert as my husband – a divorcee – refuses to seek nullification of his marriage.

My issue is my son, who was 20 and suffering mental illness and took his life two months ago. He suffered terribly from OCD and intrusive thoughts. He was faithful and two days before he died he told me he “Wanted to die for God.” I had no idea at the time he would even think that suicide was a valid way to do that. It actually gave me a bit of hope – as he was faithful and read the Bible daily I thought he was re-dedicating his life. I didn’t realize how “out of his mind” he was.

I know that he died committing a mortal sin, but that hopefully he repented in his last moments. Please pray for him in Purgatory that he may be healed and at peace.

May the soul of this young man, and all the souls of the departed

I’m very sorry for your loss.

Church teaching:

From 2282: “Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.”

2283: “We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.”
 
The Lord is merciful and would not blame someone with mental illness for what they do … especially taking their own life … I truly believe your son is in the arms of the Lord.

With that said, I will say a prayer for him.

O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. x10

Prayers to your beloved son. May our heavenly Father forgive him and welcome him with Love, open arms and a safe resting place.

Heavenly Father, forgive your son for he felt overwhelmed with the battle against the enemy. Though he was not, he felt alone in his battle, Father, have mercy on him. With your ever-forgiving heart, please grant him a peaceful resting place. Let not the enemy bring any more anguish to his family and loved ones but instead, grant them peace, tranquility, love, happiness, knowing that he’s now at peace. We ask of you this heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ, with the intercession of our Holy Mother Mary, St. Joseph and guardian angels, hear our prayers. Amen
