Please pray - husband in psych hospital

Please pray for my separated husband who has been admitted to the psychiatric hospital. I think many of the regular members might know out situation - if not, you can search for threads called “not in love anymore.” Things are very bad, and after years of honestly trying on my part, it became evident that he would not give up the very disordered behaviors he was embracing and it became bad for our children.

Please pray for him. He was having suicidal thoughts, and now they think he might have bipolar disorder. He really is very disturbed and needs mental and spiritual help. I am riddled with guilt and very upset.

Thank you immensely for your prayers today and throughout all of this. Please pray for us.

Dear Becca. I have prayed for you, your children and your husband. I pray that the specialists may be able to help your husband manage his condition so he can live a normal life. I pray that you can resolve your guilt into some form of positive energy.

Hi Becca,
I am bipolar. I received that diagnosis during a 72 hr. hold in the county mental health
hospital after a suicide attempt. It took a long time to find the meds that worked best
for me. It takes comittment and compliance on your husband’s part to achieve the
best possible bipolar management. It also takes good medical work on the part of
the health professional helping your husband. You both are in my prayers.

I’ll pray, Becca. . .and if you haven’t already, look for your state NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) chapter and see when the next meetings are. They have some excellent groups and just getting to meet with other people who are dealing with family/friends with mental illness can keep you from feeling that you’re facing this all alone. They also have family programs which can be really good for children in helping them to understand and help them to cope with their own feelings and worries.

I too have bipolar disorder and I have been in psych hospitals. I have spoken to others who have this disorder, and to their parents and spouses. It is very difficult for all involved.

Of course I don’t know your situation, but as you know your husband probably wasn’t intentionally embracing all of his disordered behaviors - he was (and is) ill (even before it was diagnosed). His illness is not your fault; you couldn’t stop it. Nor was it your fault that you didn’t know he was ill. If some of his behavior is intentional, even that is not your fault! You needed to help your children through this, and I think that is what you did.

I’ll pray that the right treatment is found for your husband (as has been for me), and that you do not blame yourself for what you can not help. God understands the immense difficulties you have been dealing with - trust in Him!

Becca, please don’t feel guilty. What your husband is experiencing was most likely brought on by events well outside of your control. I am convinced that you or anything you did or didn’t do caused your husband’s illness. Experts believe that some people have a disposition towards Bipolar disorder in their genes. Therefore, it is the kind of illness that is bound to surface eventually, and it’s something that needs to be dealt with rather than suppressed.

I will remember you, your husband and your family at the Rosary and Mass tonight. Having an illness myself (OCD), I can empathise to a certain extent with what your husband must be going through; and going through a very difficult breakup myself, my heart goes out to you. God bless. :gopray:

I can’t thank you enough for devoting your time to praying for us. You are such wonderful Christians, and the world is blessed to have you. I am praying for you, too.

I wanted to tell you that I spoke to my husband while in the hospital, and while I do believe he has mental problems and depression, I also believe that this suicide attempt and hospitalization are more manipulation and attention-seeking. His views have not changed at all, and even talking to him on the phone he was saying how much he likes crossdressing and will continue to do it. This, of course, is not the only issue, but it was one of the bigger ones.

With all this in mind, he is an incredibly disturbed individual and I pray God will heal him. I have no idea if he wants to be healed - I know he is the sort of person who likes to be a victim in a situation and listen as people praise him and give him attention. It has been very hurtful, and I know God has healed and strengthened me time and time again. God is so wonderful. He will heal anyone who really wants it - anyone willing to let go and let God. Please pray this man will be able to step down and let God step up.
