Thanks to all who continue to pray for my nephew!

God bless you all! 🙂

I will keep them in my prayers. I have a 7 year-old nephew (named J. as well) who is very much like your nephew. His situation is somewhat better, but my family understands much of what your family is going through. My heart goes out to all of you. God Bless.

I’ve worked with autistic children, and I understand how challenging their behaviors can be. Please know that they are in my prayers.

Thank you all for continuing to pray. God bless you and yours! 🙂

I remember you mentioning something about autism in another thread, and I believe we even had a brief PM exchange about the topic.

I certainly sympathize with the agony your sister has to endure on behalf of her two autistic children, and will be praying to St. Dymphna for all of them. She’s been of great comfort to my own family as we suffer the trials that come with autism.

A few years ago, I attended a conference in which two adults with autism (well, one with high-functioning autism and one with Asperger syndrome) gave a series of talks about their life experiences. The woman with HFA spoke of her frustration with everyone trying to fix her all the time, as though she were some kind of lab experiment. She desperately longed to be loved rather than fixed, and the pain in her eyes and voice were palpable as she spoke.

On the way home from the conference, I took time to reflect and pray about what she said, and decided that we needed to take a different course of action in dealing with our oldest son, who is most severely affected by autism (age 8, doesn’t speak, wears diapers, etc.). We decided to appreciate Jacob for who he is, and stopped all therapy, as it was just a way to financially enrich the therapists, since he was making no progress. We told Jacob of our decision to accept him the way he is. Immediately, his coutenance lightened, body posture relaxed, and then he spontaneously gave me a hug.

I know your sister is going through a lot of pain, and she thinks the therapies are helping him. That may very well be true (but it wasn’t in our case). I would prayerfully consider asking her to evaluate whether he needs all this therapy, or whether he simply needs to be at home with his mommy. It could very well be that he is acting out so severely because he finds the therapy sessions demeaning, repetitive, mind-numbing or incomprehensible, and has no tools to express those complex emotions.

Furthermore, there is no shame in admitting that these treatments are simply too expensive and stopping them for financial reasons only.

Finally, the chaos in your sister’s relationship with her chidlren’s father could be exacerbating J’s symptoms. His unwillingness to acknowledge J’s disability isn’t helping, and it may be time, if it is legally permissible, for your sister to reduce the amount of contact he has with his father, especially if she notices his behaviors worsening afterwards.

At any rate, I’ve probably said more than is warranted in a prayer request thread. I will be in deep prayer over this situation.

God Bless,
Dan

ps… while it may be true that Asperger syndrome is considered a ‘mild’ form of autism, it certainly hasn’t played out that way in our household. Our Aspie daughter is a FAR bigger challenge than our autistic son.

Dear Friends,
I have several children who have autism, and also my late brother was autistic.

I am running an ongoing novena to St Philomena for the healing of autism. I have a priest of Lourdes, France who prays each week for the people (who have autism), whose names are submitted to be included in the novena. (Only the first name of the person is required).
Greetings and prayers for all your intentions,
Mary Ann
(Australia)

Will keep in daily prayer with St. Rita patroness of difficult/desperate causes…

**Please pray! My sister (B.) needs your prayers desperately for herself and her son, my nephew. My nephew J. is severely autistic. My sister is a single parent, with two other children. J. is 6, her other two are 4 (N.) and 7(M.) **Her youngest N. is suspected to have Asperger’s Syndrome (a more mild form of autism.) He could use your prayers too, as well as “big sis M.” who helps my sister care for both boys.

Anyways, J. is becoming unmanageable. He tries to run away, he hurts himself (but thankfully not others), he almost bit off his tongue during one of his fits (there is a gaping hole about six teeth long in his tongue!), he can’t talk at all, he has never spoken in the six years of his life! My sister is afraid to put him in a group home as his dad might apply for full custody of J. Dad does not even acknowledge J. has autism, let alone realize the severity of it. He has run away from dad’s house and the police had to bring him back. So she’s trying to keep him out of the group home for a good reason.

She’s at a loss and doesn’t know what else to do. She does physical fitness training so she can have the strength to run after him (cause he’s FASTER than any adult we know) as well as be able to pin him down (its the ONLY way he’ll take his absolutely necessary medications.) J. sees SO many doctors and therapists she’s broke. She is on food stamps. She has to keep quitting her jobs cause of J. He can’t be in day care and school only runs so long. She is suffering SO much. She needs prayers, as well as her son. And really, as do all of them.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE pray for them all.
Praying for your sister and her children.
