I agree with you. Couple the verses you cited with John with 1 Cor 10:16-19 and 1 Cor 11:27-29 and its really hard to understand those who don’t believe in the real presence:

"16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider the people of Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices partners in the altar? 19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?"
1 Corinthians 10:16-19 (RSV-CE)

27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.

In addition, the early Church fathers uniformly believed in the real presence of the Eucharist (St. Ignatius, a direct disciple of John is quoted as stating before 200 AD that only heretics deny the real presence in the Eucharist) and this remained a common (near uniform) belief until the reformation.

Perhaps the Catholic Church removed that part where Christ explains it’s only symbolic!
