I’m a new Catholic and have the greatest problems figuring out the seriousness of sins! Anyway, I went to confession today and one of the things I had to confess was that I looked at erotic pictures on the internet and for brief moments gave in to the phantasies. That’s exactly what I said. (It was the thing I was most ashamed of but to my surprise the priest didn’t react to it and instead focused on another thing I confessed which I regarded as “less bad”.) But when I came home I was overcome with doubts if my confession regarding the pictures was sufficient. (Edited). But this time I just said erotic pictures. Because of a deadline I was facing for university I was forced to write my confession in a hurry this time and the sin was over a week old. I couldn’t go to confession right away because of a surgery. Was this sufficient or did the kind of pictures make the sin worse and I should have confessed it?

Thank you for your help and please don’t think less of me.

All sins confessed to the priest through this sacrament are forgiven. Just because the priest did not make a big deal about it, does not mean that your sins are not forgiven. The reason that the priest did not react to you confessing this sin is because he has probably heard the same sin a thousand times in the confessional. The only time that you would not be forgiven is if you deliberately withheld confessing a serious sin to the priest. If you were to forget a sin, but had the intention of confessing it, you would still be forgiven.

If you confessed it, it’s forgiven. ( If you forgot it, it’s forgiven. If you just chickened out and didn’t confess it, that’s another story.)

You confessed it. End of story.

Sometimes the priest has nothing to say about anything I confess. But that’s OK.

Did he tell you that your sins were forgiven??

Did he tell you to go in peace before you left??

Don’t let doubts disturb your peace. They are most likely not from God.

I am not competent to tell you that, but the priest to whom you confessed is. If he gave you absolution, and you did not flat out lie or withhold sins intentionally, your confession is valid. Your emotions are irrelevant. You are absolved, those sins are washed away, as far as the east is from the west, to the bottom of the sea. Accept this truth of God’s mercy, don’t think of those sins again, and rejoice.
