I need clarification on the requirements. Am I required to go to Mass to receive Holy Communion every day Nov 1-8 to obtain the plenary indulgence or just once? I attend daily Mass but the issue with me is I attend the Vigil Mass on Saturday. Do I need to attend a Sunday Mass as well?

confession once in 8 days and communion as you do daily. and do some work like reading the bible for half an hour anywhere, or joining in a public rosary, or attending adoration, each time you want to get an indulgence.

the indulgence can be for your or the souls in purgatory. Mass is not a requirement.

You can earn the indulgence on each day but you need a separate Holy Communion for each day you want the plenary indulgence. So basically you go to Communion daily. If you only go once then you can only get one plenary indulgence.

So yes, you need to receive on Saturday and on Sunday. (Or twice on Sunday with the second being at a Mass you participate in, as you’re allowed to do the Communion within a few days. The second Communion could be used for an indulgence you earn doing the work on Saturday.)

Don’t forget you also need a separate prayer for the Holy Father’s intentions for each plenary.

One confession should cover all the days as long as you stay in a state of grace during all the days.

Oh. I thought it was only one plenary indulgence for the eight days. Good to know that I can get up to eight plenary indulgences.

Thanks.
PS I probably asked this last year. 😄

There are some other special indulgenced acts:

Indulgenced Acts for the Poor Souls A partial indulgence can be obtained by devoutly visiting a cemetery and praying for the departed, even if the prayer is only mental. One can gain a plenary indulgence visiting a cemetery each day between November 1 and November 8 . These indulgences are applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory.

Our town has Mass at the Catholic Cemetery on November 2 every year (except when Nov 2 falls on a Sunday). There is a lovely altar, this is the one ad orientum mass that will be said in our town each year.

When I die, I want to be interred as close to the Altar as possible.

Yes. We visit a local cemetery every year praying for the departed. Back in 2016, we were in Jereusalem and asked our tour gude to find us a cemetery near the hotel so we could pray. He obliged. 😄

Great, informative thread.

This is from the article:

" 1. the faithful must receive the sacrament of confession , either eight days before or after the pious act is performed,"

Can someone explain this. Wouldn’t confession have to received before so the faithful is in a state of Grace? Am I missing something.

you can get one plenary indulgence a day, every day of the year, not just for this coming week. And you can get it for yourself or for the dead.

Partial indulgences can be gotten every day too.
The conditions for indulgences must be met for both plenary and partial indulgences.

If you fall out of Grace, you must return to Confession. Goes without saying

First of all, it’s not 8 days any more, it’s 20. The Pope extended it during the Jubilee Year 2000 and the Church kept the extension. I have heard some traditional priests who still say 8 days from the pulpit, but I go by the Vatican guidance.

Second of all, it is possible to go more than 20 days without confession and still be in a state of grace, but I think the confession requirement is designed to encourage frequent confessions and thus better ensure that you have a developed conscience and really do stay in the state of grace.

I thank the other posters for reminding me this indulgence can be had. God bless you all. 🙂

I need clarification on the requirements…
This book gives all the requirements and every CURRENT indulgence now in effect translated directly from the Vatican Latin into English:

http://store.usccb.org/manual-of-indulgences-p/5-474.htm

https://www.amazon.com/Manual-Indul...007TLEMEI/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

It is the ONLY current English translation of Enchiridion Indulgentarium from the Latin. If you live in the United States or need to read in the English language, the approved English translation of the current, fourth edition Enchiridion Indulgentiarum (1999) is published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) under the title “Manual of Indulgences.” You can find it at several places on the web along with an e-book and a Kindle version, too.

There are many, many versions of the Manual, Enchiridion, Raccolta, etc. going far, far back in time, but this is the ONLY current one in English. Some stores seem to carry the third edition – which has been superseded by this fourth edition…

The above-mentioned book will have you graduating summa cum laude in the Indulgences 101 class of 2018! (Tuition is $20 for textbook – plus S&H.)

Gaudeamus igitur!. 😃

🤦‍♀️ Of course!
On most Fridays throughout the year I say the Stations of the Cross for the Holy Souls with the intention of a plenary indulgences for them.

Thanks for reminding me.

Hi, I wonder if I did this right, today? I went to Confession on Saturday, and to the best of my knowledge kept myself in a state of grace. I went to mass this morning and received Communion. I went to the Catholic cemetery and said a special 5 decade Rosary for the souls in Purgatory.

Here’s where I might have messed up. I offered my intentions to the “Souls in Purgatory”. I did specifically mention my deceased Godfather, and a recently deceased cousin in one part of the special Rosary. Will the indulgence be applied to one of my relatives, or just to a random soul? I always get nervous when I’m attempting a Plenary, and feel like I messed something up. If so I will try again before the 8th. Nothing was wasted if some poor soul benefits for the effort. Thanks.

You did fine. Simply tell God you would really like him to help your grandfather or relative. God is not bound by time and knows what’s in your heart so you can tell him now and he’ll backdate it to the day you did the plenary.

Remember each plenary will help one soul so if you have 2 relatives to help then get 2 plenaries.

Thank you for your advice! I will make my intention clearer in a separate prayer. I’m going to try for one more based on my ability to receive this week.
