What are the rules when one is trying to gain a plenary indulgence but there is no Pope for whose intentions to pray? Thank you for your time.

I thought of the same question. 🙂 Honestly, this is a question I do not know the answer to.

The Holy Father does set out his prayer intentions months in advance. So we could still pray for those intentions in the interim. That’s what I would suggest.

It would seem to be the case that ordinarily one may not obtain a plenary indulgence at that time-- for there will be no Pope during that period.

Except for the Plenary Indulgence “at the point of death” when a Priest is not available – which “waves” the ordinary conditions – for those who have been a habit of reciting some prayers during their lives.

However norm 24 permits confessors to commute conditions for those for whom it is impossible because of a legit impediment. So it seems to be possible for a penitent to seek such a commutation --for example into prayer for the conclave.

They are published for the entire year already, for example:

March 2013

General: That respect for nature will grow, with the awareness that all creation is the work of God entrusted to human responsibility.

Missionary: That bishops, priests and deacons may be tireless proclaimers of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

Such was published prior to the surprising “news”.

And I think that since there will be no Pope at that time such while good to pray for would not fit the requirements. However there are other options in terms of a confessor dispensing the condition due to there not being a Pope at that time.
