Plural wives in Jesus time

I know that many Old Testament figures had multiple wives. In fact it seems as if most did, including Bible heros like David, Jacob, and Solomon. My question is, was this still common In Judaism during the time of Jesus’ earthly life? Thanks in advance to our many historical and Biblical experts!

you do not see it recorded in the NT so most likely it was not longer practiced by the remaining Jews trying to follow the Torah.

Polygamy was never condoned in the Torah, although it was practiced; and every time it appeared, it led to generational trouble, from the conflict of Isaac and Ishmael to the civil wars of David’s sons.

Genesis says that a man “shall cling to his wife”. Not wives. Based on the history of royal Israel, it would seem that polygamy was never the will of God for them.

I wouldn’t say it was exactly common even in OT times. Polygamy is generally fueled by political expediency. As such, only the most powerful would be in the position to desire, or even afford, multiple wives. So, no, it was not very common in Jesus’ day.

Polygamy was not permitted in Israel at the time of Christ. In fact, it was not permitted in Rome or for Roman citizens throughout the Roman Empire at the time of Christ and during the Christian Era. I am sure there were instances of it in various parts of the Empire, but it was at best tolerated but “frowned upon”.

As I recall, the Talmud records that Rabbi Tarfon (first century; said to have served in the temple; mentioned in the Passover Seder) had 300 wives. See also 1Timothy 3:2.
