I am a Latin Rite Catholic, but I very much love the Eastern Churches–especially the Eastern approach to spirituality.

I’ve read several Orthodox books which I enjoyed tremendously (e.g., The Orthodox Way, The Orthodox Church, Historical Road, The Historical Road of Eastern Orthodoxy and several others.

I also love listening to several Ancient Faith podcasts (e.g., Coffee Cup Commentaries, At the Intersection of East and West, The Names of Jesus, Orthodixie and more.)

So my questions are:

  1. *]Can you recommend any Eastern Rite Catholic books along this vein?

The only one I know of is Light of the East. I’ve had the privilege of meeting the host, Fr. Tom Loya, and attending Liturgy at his parish.
I have caught a few episodes of Light of the East. It is very good. I do wish there were more Easter Rite podcasts though.

How about books? Could you recommend any books?

Thank you.

  1. The Face of God by Archbishop Raya is a good book on Byzantine Catholicism.

Hello Militant Sparrow,

This is a shameless plug on my part, but I’d recommend checking out some books published by Eastern Christian Publications (ecpubs.com), as well as videos by Orientale Lumen Television (oltv.tv) OLTV has a number of wonderful “Adult Enrichment” series. If you enjoyed “The Orthodox Church” and “The Orthodox Way” we have several video series by Metropolitan Kallistos that he did specially for us. I would recommend the “Mystical Theology” series as a good place to start.

The books “Eastern Christianity in the Byzantine Tradition” and “Image, Symbol and Mystery: An Eastern Christian View of the Sacraments” by Fr. Lawrence Cross are also wonderful books. Both of them are also available in audio (CD or DVD) format from OLTV. I think you’d really enjoy them.

ICXC + NIKA,
Phillip

Phillip,
thank you. I will definately check them out.
I hope you enjoy what you find. I also got to thinking that we have a couple of series by Fr. David Anderson (a protege of the great liturgical theologian, Fr. Alexander Schmemann) that you might enjoy taking a look at. Currently we have a series on the Eucharist and another on Baptism by him. In the works are two series on the Ante-Nicene Fathers, again by Fr. Anderson.

Also, check out the plenary sessions of the Orientale Lumen Conferences, on the same site Phillip has mentioned here. Presenters include Metropoitan Kallistos, Archimandrite Taft, Father Loya and others.

Many thanks for all those that offered suggestions! I’m pretty much in the same situation as the OP.
