  • Fruits should be eaten on their own, should not be combined into a dish/meal FULLSTOP.
  • Fruits can be combined with salad only but not with savoury food in a dish. eg apple salad.
  • Fruits can be present in anything eg pineapple on pizza, mango chicken, banana peanut butter sandwich.

i know someone who absolutely hates pineapple combined with other food so i’m wondering whether anybody else is like this. 🙂

Fruit belongs in a bowl on the counter for snacking. Pineapple does not belong on pizza. Lemons should not be made into pies. My family would not agree with me. 🙂

I like fruit-meat combinations in hot, savory food but I don’t want all my main dishes to consist of fruit and meat. So to answer the title question: no. I don’t think fruit “should” be part of my main dish, but in general I find it pleasant when on the relatively rare occasions fruit is present in the main course.

Fruit is delicious in every way! Snacking alone, in salads and desserts, as well as savory meals. Fried apples n onions, pork roast and applesauce, roast beef and turkey in cranberry sauce, chicken curry topped with apple slices, raisins, and pineapple…the list goes on. 😋😋

I think it depends. I do like some fruits in main dishes, but sometimes (like apples or cranberry in a salad) are just gross to me.

Tomato is a fruit, right - so yes, ok on pizza, salad, etc. I am not a fan of cooks who use adventure for the sake of adventure as a substitute for good basic instincts with combining flavors. Sometimes there is a really good reason why no one has done something before. Still, blending flavors, including fruit, can be a good thing - I had marinated strawberries on a green butter lettuce salad and it was ok - not great, but a pleasant flavor. I am told German cooking commonly involves sweet/savory mixes; I don’t do a lot of German cooking. Riesling is kind of an anti-wine to my palate. The argument for just eating the fruit straight up is that you can focus on that flavor - I usually prefer that. I buy blueberries and just run them under the water and eat them right out of the container. Just love them. I don’t need yogurt or sugar or salad or oatmeal.

As someone who has a number of medical conditions that impact diet, I have come to enjoy fruit with a main dinner course. It isn’t so much out of choice as necessity. I’ve come to enjoy steak with strawberries (whole) or pear or apple slices. Fruits with cheese and/or nuts and olives is another option. I guess it is what you choose to get used to.
One of the five major food groups is fruits AND vegetables. There is no law that says one can only use vegetables with main course meats and such dishes.
I rather enjoy eating things such as port, poultry, and beef or lamb with fresh fruits on the side. Then again, I have to.

I have celiac/wheat allergies and watch empty carbs, so I eat a lot of vegetables in or with my main dish. Fruits are sugary but occasional pieces add variation and flavour.
