OOH! I’m the first to vote, how exciting! My favorite series is the Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett. I’ve got practically every book (and there’s a lot of them) and have read them many times. Absolutely wonderful.

My favourite fantasy series are, in order;

Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series- Tad Williams
LoTR
Narnia
The Old Kingdom series- Garth Nix

Does it have to be a series? My favourite fantasy novels are Deerskin and Spindle’s End (Robin McKinley), The Time Traveler’s Wife (Audrey Niffenegger), Fire and Hemlock (Diana Wynne Jones), and The Neverending Story (Michael Ende).

Actually, those are just the ones I remember right now. I think I have a lot of other favourites, but those are currently on top.

Michael Moorcock’s Elric saga. Either that, or Roger Zelazny’s Chronicle of Amber. Of course, Fritz Lieber’s Fafhrd and Gray Mouser tales are good. And then there’s Robert E. Howard’s Conan and Edgar Rice Burroughs’s John Carter. Fred Saberhagen’s Twelve Swords deserves honorable mention. R. A. MacAvoy’s Trio for Lute is also nice.

Out of the suggestions, Narnia, but I like Lewis’s other space series better (although I think it classifies more as sci-fi - never could figure out where that line was though 😛 )

How about Piers Anthony’s Xanth series? Absolutely hilarious!

The Lord of the Rings hands down for me. I’ve read it at least once a year since the first time when I was twelve, so about tweny-five times or so to date.

Terry Prachett’s Discworld series is a close second for me. Good to see I’m not the only Prachett fan here!

Other favourites are Harry Potter, David Eddings’s Belgeriad, Terry Brooks’ Magic Kingdom for Sale, and Stephen R. Donaldson’s Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. As much as I dislike the character of Thomas Covenant, Donaldson’s writing is superb.

Lapsed Terry Brooks’ *Magic Kingdom for Sale [/quote said:

I forgot about Terry Brooks! I haven’t read any of his recent work, but I loved the Magic Kingdom books and the early Shanara books.

Oh, yeah- I forgot Pratchett. The Guards books are my favourite. I knew I was leaving a lot out.

I thought about adding Lewis’ Space Trilogy, but they’re science fiction more than fantasy. Till We Have Faces might count as fantasy, though, and it’s excellent.

My favorite is the Shannara books by Terry Brooks. The newer ones have gotten a lot darker, but are still very good.

That aside, Narnia is my second favorite. After that my favs start having problems: Harry Potter (predictable), Eragon/Inheritance (same old same old), Xanth (every book is the exact same story.)

I would recommend the “Dark is Rising” series by Susan Cooper. The first book is called Over Sea, Under Stone. I learned about it in a Children’s Literature class I took. It isn’t a children’s book - maybe young adult.
Also, I did like Ursula LeGuin’s Earthsea novels.
