Joe Starrs, director of American Life League’s Crusade for the Defense of Our Catholic Church, released the following statement in response to a recent poll conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. The poll finds that the majority of American Catholics questioned in this survey disapprove of Catholic bishops withholding Holy Communion from pro-abortion Catholic public figures:

If the findings of this latest poll are accurate, it is unfortunate. This is a clear sign that the bishops-the teachers of the faith-must work harder to educate all Catholics about the Church’s indisputable teachings on the sanctity of all human life-teachings which both condemn procured abortions without exception and address the requirements for proper reception of the Holy Eucharist.

According to the poll, Catholics who admitted that their professed faith was not an important part of their lives overwhelmingly stated that withholding Communion from pro-abortion public figures was inappropriate.* Conversely, Catholics who seriously and consistently practice their faith stated that withholding Holy Communion is the right thing to do. Obviously, individuals that have a firm understanding and belief in the Church’s teachings support the truth.

Well, at least we now know who understands the truth our Catholic faith has to offer. Nominal Catholics have embraced the secular world and live by its values while not noticing they have already rejected the Christian values our Church upholds. These folks are not even Cafeteria-Catholics, they’re pagans pretending to be Catholic! But of course, I’m not into any type of judgments as you know! Dear Lord, my nose of growing!

Antonio 😃

It really reinforced Bp Chaput’s statement that there are many who sit in the pews on Sundays (even if only occasionally) and don’t realize they are not Catholic anymore.

So true. its almost as if our faith has nothing to say to them in the way they should conduct their lives!

Both priests and lay persons need proper catechesis.

You don’t hear doctrine from the sermons anymore. Catholics don’t know their faith. We can have a revival of Catholicism in the US, but it will take some time and a great deal of effort.

True, but the revival can’t take place if some priests and some lay people no longer believe in the tenets of Catholicism and are motivated not so much by what our Church teaches but by what the secular world teaches them.

Antonio :crying:

Antonio, don’t you think in some cases ignorance plays a role as well. Based on what some people post that their priests tell them, I don’t know that they are capable of givin catechesis because they don’t know themselves.

Which again puts is squarely back into the laps of the Bishops. Little by little I am seeing some better formed Bishops emerging and I feel this is encouraging as a start - I pray they hold firm and don’t let the others run rough shod over them and maybe by the time our children and grandchildren reach their middle years, they will have a true Catholic Church once again.

Wow! They needed to conduct an actual poll to come to this conclusion? Nothing could be more obvious. Ask any five random Catholics you know the most basic question about the Faith and see how they do.

If previous polls reveal that 70% of Catholics don’t believe in the Real Presence, it’s all downhill from there.

I know the homily is supposed to be a time of pastoral reflection on the liturgical readings, but if it were up to me, I would declare a Year of Catechesis where the orthodox truths of the Faith would be expounded forcefully and without compromise from the pulpit for a full year–start from the basics and go from there.

I’m thinking about something like Fr. Corapi’s EWTN series on the Catechism of The Catholic Church. Our pastor did this for about 12 weeks on the Ten Commandments and it was GREAT!
