I personally like the term “Orthodox Catholic.”

Byzantine Catholics use both terms, with the former being most conspicuous in the liturgical prayers. In fact, the Russian Catholic Church called and still calls itself “Russian Orthodox Catholic” Church.

The term “Orthodox” underlines, in a marvellous way, our spiritual culture and ecclesial roots. The term “Catholic” means, for us, the Eucharistic model of the Church (i.e. the whole in the part).

Except for the current meaning of Orthodox being “not in communion with Rome”.

But this is a discussion that we have beat to death before.

My boyfriend is Chaldean and refers to himself as Chaldean Catholic. I’ve tried to explain that we are all technically Roman Catholic, but he prefers to be called Chaldean.

He is correct- he is a Chaldean Catholic.

Thank you! Yeah I’ve been a little confused about that because I’ve seen 23, 22, 6, 3, and now 7. I haven’t gotten that far in the Catechism yet so thank you!

Peace be with you too
I this these are the meanings:
23 Catholic ritual churches,
22 eastern Catholic ritual churches,
6 traditions (Roman, Alexandrian, Antiochene, Armenian, Chaldean, Constantinopolitan)
7 liturgical rites based upon Patriarchal Churches: Latin, Byzantine (Melkite), Alexandrian/Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, Maronite, and Chaldean.

Five eastern traditions (Alexandrian, Antiochene, Armenian, Chaldean, Constantinopolitan) given in the canon law which with the Latin makes six, and 23 ritual Churches, given in the Annuario Pontifico which is an official Vatican publication.

Here are the eastern canon law (CCEO) definitions:

Canon 28
Code:
  1. A **rite** is the liturgical, theological, spiritual and disciplinary patrimony, culture and circumstances of history of a distinct people, by which its own manner of living the faith is manifested in each Church sui iuris.

  2. The **rites** treated in this code, unless otherwise stated, are those which arise from the Alexandrian, Antiochene, Armenian, Chaldean and Constantinopolitan traditions.
