Spiritual direction is something that is being discovered now by so many lay people. I have been in direction for years and it has helped me immensly. The key is to get a good director. Many think that all parish priests can be directors but the thing is that it is a charism that not all parish priests have. The relationshiop between a director and a directee is very intense and very intimate. It goes beyone confessing faults (which is different that sacramental confession but can be part of it if the director is a priest), but actually trusting that person to journey with you in your spiritual life. You director commits to praying for you (hopefully daily) and you pray for him or her. Obedience is key as is trust. But the trust is not specifically in the director but in the Spirit who leads the director. There should be nothing that you need to hide from your director when it comes to your spiritual life. It is also important to remember that direction is not therapy, and there are some issues affecting ones spiritual life that in actuallity need to be handled by a psychologist or counselor. I contend that a good director is hard to find, but once one does find one, hold onto him or her. Also do not be afraid to “'test” out different directors. Most good directors will take new directees on a trial basis to see if you are both good for each other, and they are not offended if you choose to seek out someone different. Also do not go for direction to somoene who has too many directees or make direction into a “business” of sorts. Remember it is a relationship that involved commitement and time.
