Tradition has it that church bells rang - at weddings -
Or funerals - or on Sunday, before mass.
Any interesting thoughts ?

A computer timer rings ours, but they ring the Angelus at 6am, noon, and 6pm, along with the hours of the day.

It usually tolls after funerals and weddings, along with after Mass on solemnities

My church has bells. They ring. However, ‘someone ‘ doesn’t ring them. A computer does.

I wasn’t sure if you meant during Mass or in general, like the Angelus.

There is a Parish near me that rings the exterior bells during mass instead of the handbells

They do that at Gethsemani Abby also. I think it is a good idea, proclaiming what is happening in Mass. And yet I don’t think mass bells are even required anymore.

I assume you mean big exterior bells?
You might clarify that that’s what you mean, rather than altar bells (also called sanctus bells, I believe).

I was going to say “ big bells “ -
But I figured I’d be tempting someone to make a wise crack 😛

More and more churches have loudspeakers instead. They play recordings of bells ringing, even if the church has bells in its tower that are never rung.

The reason I mentioned this topic - a local church - has a new Pastor -
And he’s taking donations - blue collar type town -
It’s going to cost 10,000 bucks to fix back up the bells.
He wants to ring them again -
It’s a 100 year old church … kinda struggling…
Kind of a bold attempt - that I like !

Ugh. I think the recorded bells are hideous. Since recordings of music are not allowed during Mass, why are they allowed in place of real bells? Yuck. So fake.

Our parish has bells, they can be rung on demand (for instance, the tolling of the bell at a funeral Mass) however most of the ringing is done by an electronic ringing system.

Hourly bells, the Angelus at Three, the “Mass is beginning” bell that rings at 5 minutes before Mass time. Different rings for different things.

When the ringer was broken, the neighborhood people asked if they could donate to help repair!

When our church was renovated in 2010, the children of the parish and the school raised money to buy bells, and the renovation included a structurally sound bell tower.

We have three bells, and different people take turns ringing them before every Sunday mass. The ropes are in the staircase to the choir loft, so some of the teens in our choir ring them before our mass.

My church has one large bell outside.
It is rung before mass and for funerals.
My other half is one of the 2 bell ringers 😇
