Once again, I must point out that Constantinople declared the election of a Pro-Rome Patriarch of the Melkites (and an Arab at that) invalid. Of course, they were outside their jurisdiction on that one. To me, that flies in the face of the “amongst equals” part of “first amongst equals”

That is because Ottoman Empire brought disorder in to Eastern Patriarchates, Turks wanted that Constantinople dominates all Patriarchates, and Turks would then influence all Churches through the Patriarch of Constantinople. As soon as Turks lost power, the Church normalized it’s canonical life.
