Thanks Jean! Sorry for the drift.

Is anyone else on here able to go to the Pontifical Mass?

My threads always end up on life support after a couple of days, (except for one ripper that went on for weeks a few months back!) despite me trying CPR and intensive care, etc. and then I make a decision on behalf of the thread based upon what “the thread would have wanted.” I turn off the machine.

Anyway, I might bump it after November 3 and file a report on how the Cardinal’s Pontifical Mass at his Cathedral went for anyone who is interested.

"To implement the Motu Proprio ‘Summorum Pontificum’ His Eminence George Cardinal Pell, Archbishop of Sydney will celebrate Pontifical Mass at the Throne according to the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite at St Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday November 3rd at 10 a.m."

This quote is from the flyer that was included with the weekly bulletin of the FSSP Mass I go to.

It doesn’t matter how or by what means, I am going to do whatever it takes to be at this Mass in the Cathedral on November 3!

Will anyone else be going? It’s a long way for most CAFers around here, but I know a few who hail from this neck of the woods! Come along if you possibly can and let the good Cardinal see that people have a devotion to the Extraordinary Form.

God bless Cardinal Pell!!

This is awesome! Let’s all pray for our brothers and sisters down under!

Apart from Antarctica which is uninhabited, Australia is the world’s driest continent. I think this could be taken in the spiritual sense equally. I have heard of more than one visiting Priest say that spiritually speaking, Australia is one of the woorst countries in the world. There are many good devout people but they are seriously outnumbered.

Apathy rules. Sports, sun, and pleasure-seeking materialism are the religion of the masses. It’s embarrassing. The Church is very weak at the moment.

I really hope that this Mass may be the beginning of a turnaround in Australia for the Church. Cardinal Pell is high profile. The media watch him like a hawk, waiting to pounce. This Mass will likely get some attention in the secular press, whether good or bad.

Innovation and liberal ideas have been an utter disaster in the Church for the last forty years or so. Tradition is the key, I believe, that can unlock the treasures of the Church once more. All the other ideas that were “modern” in the 70’s and 80’s should be locked up and never seen again.

If you are anywhere near St Mary’s Cathedral on this day, please go to the Cardinal’s Mass and support Tradition. This just may be the beginning of the Church in Australia taking back some of what has been lost over the last decades.

I agree completely captaincoog. And it’s really good to see that a Cardinal will be celebrating the Old Mass. I do think the Motu Proprio can help spark genuine liturgical renewal all over the world (because I think good liturgy and a healthy Church go hand in hand–you can’t have one without the other).

I live fairly close by, but have zero interest in attending the TLM. I’m very glad it’s being offered for those who do want it, though.
Just curious, by any chance are you related to someone named JKirk from Las Vegas?

Hey now! I didn’t write this post! I think my husband has accidently been posting as me! oooops! 😛

:rotfl: I am flattered by the comparison, and have noted the similarities in thought between myself and JKirk, but no.

I just want to get us away from this idea that good liturgy automatically means the TLM.

In any event the vast majority of Masses will still be in the NO form, so a cleanup of THAT will do just as much, if not a heck of a lot more, service to the faith.

Reform of the NO is something even those who never attend it should be striving for, for the sake of the vast majority of us Catholic schlubs who do. And it is something I intend to devote some serious prayer and penance to, alongside praying for greater availability of the TLM for those attached to it, of course 😉

I’m flattered by the comparison to so orthodox and charitable a soul as Lily’s. Any relation would be exceedingly distant, since my family left the British Isle’s nearly 400 years ago (well, the Scots didn’t leave until the 1800’s, but they were lowland Presbyterians by that point, so I doubt it, unless Lily is a convert from a staunch Presbyterian or Free Church family).

Aww shucks :o

Ok, enough wallowing in this mutual love-fest 😛

I have no British blood in my background in the slightest - I’m second generation migrant to Australia from Eastern Europe. So no possibility of a relation there.

Wow! A Pontifical Mass at the Throne! Thats even better then Pontifical Mass at the faldstool. I wonder where they will get the 23 acolyted to attend Cardinal Pell.

I’m sure in a city of 4.5 million (means roughly 1.5 million Catholics) they can cough up 23 acolytes from somewhere 😉

I would like to take photos of the Mass and post them on here afterward but last time I visited the Cathedral there was a “No photos please” rule at the door. They only allow official photographers to shoot.

LilyM, do you know if this restriction is still in force?

thanks!

I’m not sure about this, but I think one can purchase a permit that allows visitors to photograph inside the cathedral. (?) I guess they are protecting the income that they would have received from photographs purchased in the gift shop.

Yes photography permits are available for purchase - dont know if you need to apply beforehand or something, so get in touch with the Cathedral…

Just wanted to revive this thread for my Sydneysider friends and other well-wishers. I humbly apologise for anyone I offended on this thread when it first started 😦

Today’s the day, eh! I’ll be thinking of you at work 🙂 Let us know how it went. Pictures (if possible) would be awesome!

Prayers to Our Lady Help of Christians (patroness of the Cathedral and the Diocese) as well as Pope St Pius V for the success of the Mass and many more in future.
