In the Creed, why is it neccessary to name Pontius Pilate specifically?
 
It is probably used as a well-known secular historical reference to indicate that Jesus is a real historical personage and not simply a myth.
 
To emphasize that Christianity is not just another mythological religion, but that Christ really came into this world at a certain time and place.
 
In Justin Martyr’s correspondence with the Emperor of Rome (don’t remember the name) around 155AD, the emperor commented, “Is this Jesus the one who was executed (or crucified) by th egovernor Pontius Pilate?”

This brings to mind an interesting book I read in grade school: The Wife of Pilate, by Gertrude Le Fort. If you can find a copy at a library, it is worth a read.

Because no other “dying god” has a date in human history. The mention of a particular Roman governor as a means to fix the date of Jesus’ death is a reminder that this “dying god” is fully historical - that He is a man like us.​

 
I almost made that mistake. Thank goodness I changed my mind and named my son, Herod. It sure would have been embarrassing for him if I’d named him Pontius P.!😛
