I agree with the Pope. I have a niece who is mentally handicapped and although I love all my nieces and nephews almost as much as my own kids I must say she is my favorite. She is loving and caring and our family would not be the same without her. She truely is a blessing from God.

Lance, I agree 100% with your sentiments, and God bless you for caring so much about your niece!

My sister-in-law is pregnant for the first time, and one of the tests showed that her baby has a high probability of having Down syndrome. I’ve heard other folks in this situation whose doctors who counsel the women to have abortions. Two of our children have autism, and I shudder to think how many kids like mine would’ve been aborted if there were a test to detect this disorder prior to birth.

djrakowski,

I don’t know if your SIL is considering an abortion or not, if she is do everything you can to talk her out of it. The Knights of Columbus’ main charity is people who are mentally handicapped(MH). Being involved with them I have come to know lots of families with members who are MH and I have never met one who was sorry the child was born or would have had an abortion if they had know. Every person in the US should work a Special Olympics one time in their life. These kids are so loving, joyful and grateful that 90% of the people who work one come back the next year. God bless you for having and loving your kids just the way He gave them to you.

Lance, no worries. I don’t think my SIL would ever consider abortion. She and her husband are serious Christians, and share almost all of the pro-life convictions of the Catholic Church (the lone exception being ABC).

Again, I agree 100%. I worked Special Olympics when I was in high school, and never thought I’d be considering whether my own children may participate some day.

Back on topic, though… Our Holy Father was really just being consistent on the topic of life, as the Church has always taught. Unfortunately, the muddled messages of this world necessitate him teaching on the subject again (and again, and again…).
