Hi,

Someone recently said that a Pope denied that the Holocaust was real. They didn’t know which Pope, or did not seem to have many details beyond that.

I have read the article on the catholic.com website that deals with Pope Pius XII and the Jews and Nazis, but I can’t find it now, it was a year or so ago when I located it.

Also, in my church library, there is a book “Pope Pius XII and the Jews” and I read some of it over a year ago, and don’t remember anything regarding Pius XII ever saying anything related to trying to downplay the seriousness of the suffering of the Jews or the evil of the Nazi agenda.

I believe that there is a misunderstanding on the part of my friend, and I want to help them work through it if that is the case. Could someone help me with that?

Post the link to that article here at Catholic Answers that I can’t find.

Also, more information on a Pope (any Pope) who has ever come across as saying anything that could be possibly interpreted to mean he was denying the Holocaust in some way.

Thanks!

No Pope denied the Holocaust. The word on the street is that the Pope during the time of Holocaust claim that the Pope Pius XII neutrality was not well received by the Jews. Despite the fact that he condemned Nazism and saved many Jews.

The Book I recommend is The Myth of Hitler’s Pope: How Pope Pius XII Rescued Jews from the Nazis is a book written by American historian Rabbi David G. Dalin and published in 2005.

There was no Holocaust as of February 1939. Kristallnacht had only happened 3 months earlier.

The full truth of what was happening would become known only later. But enough was known to produce, on the Vatican’s side, innumerable interventions with governments still susceptible to admonitions. At the death of Pius XII, Jewish spokesmen, who knew the record, came forward with tributes to the late pontiff’s services in the name of humanity, for the victims of the Holocaust.
It wasn’t until 1963 with a play called “The Deputy” when a question of his “silence” was questioned. Below are some very good articles on the topic which answer many questions.

Whatever its origins, a psychological transformation does not justify distortion of the historical reality. Facts remain facts and are not to be relegated to insignificance as if they did not happen. Yet this is what is happening: all that the Pope did for the Jews, and also all that the Jews said in praise of Pius XII, has been covered with a curtain of oblivion. The real silence has been the silence of polemicists who have succeeded in closing one eye to the reality, thereby leading the public into a grotesque conception of the role of Pius XII in World War II.
If those who want to create a controversy regarding the “silence” of Pope Pius XII, then the same could be said about the US, England and the rest of the allies who definitely vocally denied the Holocaust until much closer to the end than most people think.

Pope Pius XII did what was appropriate at the time and it is easy to look back and judge almost 70 years after the fact.
