I can’t find this thread now, but I think a few of you were debating about the Pope being ‘protected by the Holy Spirit,’ as it pertains to infallibility. I meant to reply, but I had to log off.

The Pope, himself, is not infallible. He sins and makes mistakes, as he is human, although he was Divinely chosen to be the Pope. What IS INFALLIBLE is his interpretation of Sacred Scripture. The thread, from what I recall, sounded like whatever the Pope thinks on a subject is ‘infallible.’ That’s not so. Just his interpretation of Sacred Scripture. (and of course, Catholic Doctrine) But, he goes to Confession like we all do. If he infallible, we would be saying that he is on the same ‘level’ as Jesus. Only one person in all of history was infallible, and sin-free, and that was Jesus.

Forgive me if I’m getting the details wrong of what I think I recall with that thread, but I could have sworn that the discussion revolved around the Pope’s thinking on all subjects (I think this was a legal discussion?) is infallible.

Actually the Pope is only infallible when teaching on issues of faith and morals.

Even his own personal interpretation he finds for himself of sacred scripture are not unfallible unless he is using them in teaching on issues of faith and morals.

Upon accepting the papacy, the pope surrenders part of his free will to God to permit this infallibility.
