I would watch it.

If you look at the Wednesday talks he has given, they are short and easy to understand. Do understand that he is a German-speaker, and that what we read is some translators rendering of his words. A good translator would have a better command of colloquial English, than either the Holy Father or whoever might have translated this.

For there to be meaning it must be accessible to his readers. If it is not clear from the plain meaning of the words, then it does not have meaning. It has possible meanings, or possibly has no meaning. We should not have to work hard to grasp anyone’s meaning. Being clear is not being dumb. It is being clear.

I bet it was accessible to his readers (from the Pontifical Biblical Commission!). The style is a theological style and is jam-packed with information which a theologian would easily be able to ‘decrypt’.

That particular message was not meant for the man in the street and it is unfair to criticize the statement as if it were meant for the average Joe. The Pontifical Biblical Commission will be responsible for passing on the Pope’s message in language more appropriate for the average person when the time comes.

These days we are not patient enough to try to understand the Pope’s statement, we are too used to getting quick and easy information through the popular media. Everything has to be fast and easy or we get cross.

If it could have been written in a simpler way for the Pontifical Biblical Commission, the Pope would have done it.
