Once conclave is completed, and our new Pope is determined. Our Current Holy Father will become Pope Emeritus of Rome.

If a case similar to John Paul 1 (sudden death) occurred, would the See still be vacant, or would the “Pope Emeritus of Rome” step in until another Conclave could be held?

I realize this is somewhat uncharted territory, but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

While technically this is uncharted territory, we’re going to take Benedict at his word that he is truly retiring to a life of private study and prayer. Thus we will assume that normal Bishop Emeritus “rules” would apply. Normally a Bishop Emeritus would not step in and perform any administrative role during a period of time a diocese is without a bishop.
