The TV fight over the memory of JPII begins in December 2005.

I’ll just watch both … but I would prefer the one with Jon Voight.

Remember John Voight was the one who argued that Mel Gibson and his movie, “The Passion of the Christ”’ were anti-semitic. I saw him make those statements with my own eyes on a television interveiw. So I’m hesitant to support anything he does. God Bless all here.

I dont not support someone jusrt cause their views are contrary to mine. What Voight said doesnt affect my appreciation for him as an actor at all. POTC was an intense film and even Catholics have a right to not like it if they wish not to.

That being said, I dont know where the church stands on the other Pope movie, but Voights movie had the Vaticans backing as far as technical stuff etc.

Troy I see on your profile that you put down yourself as a Christian. Are you a Catholic? If not, I don’t have a problem with that since all are welcome here. My question to you if you are not Catholic is why do you care if the Vatican backs one or the other if any films?

Also Troy I respect your opinion of supporting someone even if their views are different then yours. My point is that Mel Gibson was evangelizing with his movie, “The Passion” and doing it in accordance with Catholic teaching we should support him in his efforts. But, when Jon Voight goes on national media and makes claims as I have stated above in a previous post and then capitalizes by getting a the role of Pope JP II that I do have a problem with. Mel was evagelizing and Jon is capitalizing.

You have to remember that Mel Gibson made and directed his movie. He was not one of the actors. As you pointed out, Mel was evangelizing. Jon Voight, on the other hand, is only acting the part of Pope John Paul II. In the write-up in the TV Guide it states that he is a “fallen-away Catholic”. But being a Catholic in good standing is not a criteria for getting a part to play the Pope.

If people based acting roles on that criteria, then any person playing Hitler, for example should embrace his beliefs. See? We shouldn’t nit-pick about the actors. Now if the writer were a fallen-away Catholic with an agenda, I would wonder.

I will only be able to watch the one on CBS, as ABC does not come in well at all on my tv. So I’m hoping it will be good.

Unfortunately Mel is worse than a fallen-away Catholic. He still claims he is, yet he funds SSPX chapels, their priests, and advances the “cause” of sedevancantism.

Not to mention some of the filth he did in many of his movies.

My point was not about whether Mel Gibson is or is not a good Catholic. My point was that Jon Voight doesn’t have to be a good Catholic to get the part of Pope John Paul II. He’s an actor playing a part. …Or were you agreeing with me? …it can be hard to tell if someone is or is not agreeing on a MB. 🙂

I was not dis-agreeing:)… just commenting that Mel would not make a credible Catholic evangelist, considering his bent on the papacy. All the money in the world, of which he now has a healty share, will not equate with the wrong he is doing in support of sedevacantism.

I guess we need to pray that people (especially weaker Catholics) will not fall victim to Mel’s “important” status, and claims of Catholicism.

Just my two cents. I heard or read (I think in the USA Today insert in Saturday’s paper) that the one with John Voigt was in fact screened by and approved by Pope Benedict (he even said that he hoped that people would watch it). Therefore, that is the one I will be watching.

When are the movies on TV?
ABC on Dec. 1
CBS on Dec. 4 and continues on Dec. 9

Did anyone watch ‘A man who became Pope’ part I on the Hallmark channel back in October. There’ll be part II. Not sure when it’ll be out.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I always liked Mel’s answer to people who asked him if his film was anti-semitic.
“Who do you think were there when it happened? Norweigens?”

Hi,

I saw John Kaisich’s interview on FOX with Voight and (between Kaisich’s incessant, inane interruptions) heard that Voight attended a large screening of the movie (7000 people in an auditorium) with Pope Benedict who gave the movie a papal blessing (I stress the word “blessing”). That’s a pretty good review! He said that he was sitting near the Pope and saw that he was visibly moved on several occasions (then Kaisich interrupted him).

As to his being “fallen away”, he affirmed that he was a Catholic during the interview (before Kaisich interrupted him again).

As to Gibson being fallen away/schismatic (Lol), he’s in full communion with the Church, received Communion every day while filming The Passion, sought and obtained the Vatican’s imprimatur for the film as well as frequently requesting advice from many Vatican officials during it’s production. He was also interviewed on and lauded by EWTN on numerous occasions and they’d probably go off the air before promoting a schismatic Catholic. He’s ultra- Traditional but I’d consider the source of the accusations against him, all of whom (some from within the Church) had an agenda against the film. He also sought and obtained permission from his bishop to say the Latin Mass in the chapel he built. A schismatic would have just done it.

I was planning on going out of my way to miss both movies (as I do almost all TV productions dealing with religion), but with Pope Benedict’s blessing I intend to watch Voight’s movie from beginning to end…I’ll skip the one on ABC!
