Pope Francis' devotion to Mary

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This morning I read an article entitled, “Why Does Pope Francis Love the Blessed Virgin Mary So Much?” It was interesting to me because I had read before about his devotion to “Our Lady, Untier of Knots”, how he first saw that painting in Germany and then spread the devotion in Latin America, but I had not read before how St. John Paul II’s praying of the Rosary had such a profound effect on him.

If you read the article, there seems to be more to the incident in which Pope Francis first encountered the painting of Mary in Germany. It is the same in the recounting of the incident when he saw and prayed the Rosary with John Paul II. Both of those incidents seemed to me to be particular moments of grace for Pope Francis before his becoming Pope.

Mary, Mother of the Church and Queen of the Clergy, pray for us all and especially for our Pope Francis and clergy all over the world.

St. Joseph, Protector of the Church guard us by your intercession as you protected Mary and the Christ Child on this earth.

I read some of the comments under the article and I was really sad finding out that some of us fellow Catholics are calling Pope Francis’ devotion to Mary fake, because he is against “traditionalist Catholics”.What is that supposed to mean? Why are we so uncharitable to our Pope?I leave in Cameroon,a neighboring country to Central African Republic, where the Pope visited a few weeks ago.And I can tell you,his visit to Africa during such troublesome times greatly increased my faith in God.He is a true man of God and we should learn how to be humble and give him the respect which is his due.I am so disappointed with so-called Catholics or Christians who can’t even appreciate what this Pope is doing for the catholic faith and the whole world.May God open our eyes.

Thanks for your reply and for your loving respect and gratitude towards Pope Francis. I did not read the comments, but I too have heard some critics who find fault with this Pope. We need to be very careful how we use our tongues and the words we type into computers. We will all be judged one day and held accountable for the words we say. Far better to pray for our Pope who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. He is shepherd to the whole Church and beyond the peripheries, he goes in search of the lost sheep as well.

I was happy to read of the Pope’s devotion to Mary and I do not think it is a fake at all. I’m sorry for anyone who sees it that way and I pray for all those who do not share his love for Mary our Mother. Jesus honored His Mother and so ought we all. Yes, may God open the eyes of our hearts, to see with faith, all God is doing for good. May we all learn from the Meek and Humble Heart of Jesus, through Mary’s intercession.

As a Catholic who has often times been confused by the extreme Marian devotion of some Catholics, I have been edified and reassured by this Pope… as much so as I was by Benedict’s Mariology which so perfectly ordered to Christ…

Pope Francis:

“The Gospel does not tell us anything: if she spoke a word or not… She was silent, but in her heart, how many things told the Lord! ‘You, that day, this and the other that we read, you had told me that he would be great, you had told me that you would have given him the throne of David, his forefather, that he would have reigned forever and now I see him there!’ Our Lady was human! And perhaps she even had the desire to say: ‘Lies! I was deceived!’ John Paul II would say this, speaking about Our Lady in that moment. But she, with her silence, hid the mystery that she did not understand and with this silence allowed for this mystery to grow and blossom in hope.” (December 20, 2013)
