Hi I was wondering if anyone else noticed that the Holy Father didn’t say the usual Rite of the Urbi et Orbi in Latin, instead it was turned into a Blessed Sacrament Urbi et Orbi with no words.

Normal Urbi et Orbi doesn’t have the Pope blessing us with Jesus Christ in the monstrance either.

I presume he didn’t say “the usual rite” because it’s probably not appropriate for when he is blessing us with the Blessed Sacrament.

I agree stpurl. How wonderful to have the Holy Father conveying Jesus’ own blessing to us in our time of need. And that we are able to see it on TV and even on live stream on the Internet.

Today is the fourth anniversary of Mother Angelica’s death. EWTN that she started conveyed this blessing to so many people around the world today. Their Facebook page put up the times to tune in for United States last night, and there were dozens of people in the comments asking What time for Manila, India, East Africa, Ireland, Colombia, all over the world. We are so blessed.

I’m pretty sure Urbi et Orbi, not being a sacrament, is not bound to any form or formula. It is a blessing, which is generally free in form. What would make it Urbi et Orbi is his intention, regardless of the manner in which it was imparted.

Using the Blessed Sacrament would be a really powerful Urbi et Orbi indeed.

Yes we are being blessed by Christ Himself in person. It surpasses blessings from clergy, even the pope. It’s why the clergy bringing this blessing to us wear the humeral veil.

Whenever Benediction follows Vespers, for instance, the final blessing of Vespers is omitted, because the most powerful blessing follows and replaces it.

That is most likely why the “normal” blessing was omitted. The blessing with the Blessed Sacrament is the Urbi and Orbi blessing.

He didn’t look good. He walked in the rain without a coat or an umbrella too. 🌂 🙁

Please give the Pope a break. What he did was wonderful, all Catholics praying together with him in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, bringing to God’s Mercy all the sufferings in the world for this pandemic. By the way, I had the impression that all this was very hard on the Pope, he honestly didn’t look in good health. Pray for him, pray for all the Church, pray for the world.

Thank you, now I have to figure out what the “Rite of Urbi et Orbi” is…

Pope Francis will know exactly what he is doing. Be at peace and give thanks to God we live in an era we can participate via live stream.
Also get into the spirit of these events. Stand with the Communion of Saints as we are being called to do, and

PRAY.

I thought it was beautiful that the blessing of Christ was given to the city of Rome and to the whole world at this time. The Pope’s homily was superb and offered hope and a challenge. May God bless and protect Pope Francis.
