Pope Francis' general audience featured a surprise guest

It kind of happens once in a blue moon. This is just like children wanting to come to Jesus and saying “Let the children come to me.”

Definitely undisciplined. Easily old enough to know better. Holy Father is 100% spot on.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the parents/grandparents let it happen to be “cute”.

I got a little suspicious that it wasn’t totally spontaneous when the second child, who is smaller than her brother if not younger, runs up there to try to get him to come back to his seat and he won’t come back to his seat, nor is she big enough to make him move, so now you have two of them up there. Normally I would expect the parent or an usher coming to lead the child back to his seat, not another cute little kid.
I too wondered if the parents let him or even encouraged him to go up there and interact with the Pope.

The mother did go up to get him and after a chat with Holy Father, the child was allowed to stay and play. The child is a mute.

Let me find a better news report.

Behold, Jesus went up in front of the synagogue on the Sabbath and opened the scroll of Isaiah to read from it. And then a child ran up in the middle of the audience. An usher went to remove the child, but Jesus said, "Let the little ones come unto me." And then Jesus read from the scroll while the child did somersaults in front of the audience. Behold, the people got out their phones and took pics, and they were filled with delight.

Gospel of Hank, chapter 5.

He is adorable. He reminds me of my child with Autism who would happily run on stage and play with the Swiss guard to his mother’s absolute horror!

The boy’s mother did run up immediately. Pope Francis told her to let him play, so she did. And, my boy’s Brother would have run right up there to “fix” it and bring my child back over to the family. 😉

I am glad the Holy Father handled the situation with such grace, and made it a teachable moment, but I would expect nothing less from him.

I will continue to be suspicious of this entire situation, regardless of what the parents say.

I especially like this quote from the Holy Father:
“When Jesus says we have to be like children, it means we need to have the freedom that a child has before his father,” he said. “I think this child preaches to all of us.”

Holy Father Pope Francis said it gave him cause for a lot of reflection. On Freedom and being like a child
“When Jesus says we have to be like children, it means we need to have the freedom that a child has before his father,” he said. “I think this child preaches to all of us.”

The Holy Spirit works in different ways.

snap, msdizzy!

There was a guy on Twitter that said security should have been tighter etc. Pretty sure the Swiss guards made the judgement call that he was in no danger from a little boy. It just annoyed me

The security to just get into one of those general audiences is very tight. Plus I’m guessing for the child to even be able to do this without needing to run the length of a football field, the family must have been sitting in one of the sections closer to the Pope which depending on where they were sitting could have required extra security. All that pre-screening plus its being a small child reduces the security risk.

It is very close to airport security go enter the Vatican for Mass or go into St Peter’s. Depending upon how many people there are, queues could take an hour or more. Prepare to wait and wait some more and talk with the people in the queue. I talked with a lady from a neighbour country and then she came to the same restaurant where I and friend were having lunch three hours later. She joined us and had a good time and we got some more info in return.

Sentimental nonsense. Either the parents weren’t paying attention to their responsibility, or they encouraged the kid up there. And I’m leaning towards the latter.

“People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it. But Jesus called for them and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.”” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭18:15-17‬ ‭
Also sentimental nonsense?

Pope Francis no doubt chose the word “unruly” carefully. Francis started talking about how free we feel in front of our Father, that we should feel as free as a child in front of a loving father…as free as that boy felt. Pope Francis seemed to admire the boy’s freedom.

The family of the boy appear to have been sitting in a section up front which has no barriers in front of it. There are many people in wheelchairs in this section. The boy can be seen roaming this section in the video of the Wednesday general audience.

The mother comes up right away and the Holy Father tells her to let the boy be, so she goes back to her seat. Presumably, she doesn’t want to go back up there, so instead sends her daughter, a decision which I understand and would probably have done myself. The girl is probably used to wrangling her brother.

This might not have occured to you before, but the two situations weren’t at all the same.
Perhaps it didn’t occur to you that the Pope’s words and actions echo this exact passage?
