Personally, I like the current Holy Father, Pope Francis I. I like his ecumenism, his charity and his bravery in the Dirty War. What do you all think of the Holy Father?

As for the Crisis; I feel that, with the heavy hit of the sex abuse scandal; the Church needs to re establish Her moral authority. I think we need to hear more stories of priests like Frs Emil Kapaun, Luis Padillo and Vincent Cappodanno that shows the moral character of what a priest should be like. What’s y’all’s take on it?

It’s Pope Francis, no “I” or “the First”. He will be Francis the First if another Pope in the future chooses the name Francis. Then that Pope would be Francis II. 😉

The First Vatican Council made it very clear that the Holy Father has immediate jurisdiction on all the faithful collectively and individually, and that nobody, not even an Ecumenical Council with all the Bishops and Patriarchs, can judge him. The Holy Father is to be loved, respected, and obeyed. Because he is Father and because he is Holy. He does not have to be liked. He stands in the place of Christ, on the seat of Peter. Period.

As for the Crisis, there is no Crisis. 😑 Just hotheads using the blogs and the social media to stir up division. Read “The Screwtape Letters” by C.S. Lewis - the devil and the demons often use overly zealous people to harm the Church on earth.

As the Apostle writes, “we are in the end times” [and we have been for the past 2000 years or so] and the increase in sinfulness leads to a decrease of love, as Christ warned us. The antidote? “Be of one mind and heart” and “love one another, because love covers a multitude of sins”. “He who wishes to be the greatest must be the least and the servant of all”. Love begins in the “domestic church” (the family) and continues in the Local Church (parish, diocese), in the Universal Church (especially in loving communion with the Pope and the Bishops in communion with him), and finally in the Heavenly Jerusalem, the Church Triumphant.

That can’t be right. Take for example, the case when there are three popes. You need an Ecumenical Council to judge which of the three is the valid Pope.

I like him fine, and too many people see a crisis under every bush because it gets them excited or gives them a channel for their frustrations that life isn’t black and white with a perfectly clear playbook.

The real “crisis” is not in the Church, but is in each of our own hearts…it’s sin and imperfection that we each need to root out and love God and our neighbor more.

Note I said the sin in each of our OWN hearts, not in somebody else’s heart that you don’t fully know about.

As Pete Townshend sang…
“This is no social crisis, just another tricky day for you.”

What do you mean by “bravery in the Dirty War”? What is the Dirty War?

The Dirty War was a period in Argentine history where the military junta was targeting dissidents. If I remember correctly; the Holy Father refused to narc on any priests targeted by the military. As for the title of my thread; I meant to write Pope Francis I.

Let’s check in with @StCatherineofSiena and she what her thoughts are on the matter.

There is only one Pope, and a Council has no authority to judge them to decide which one is the true Pope. They can review the election process, or how they found their way into power, but not judge the men.

I see the best examples of priests as the ones we deal with every day. So many miss that Pope Francis is trying to empower and improve the priesthood. Much of the criticism he has taken was for what he is doing with priests, who mostly do not criticize him.

And the church is each and every one of us. Each of us needs to tell that story to others. Suggestion, when someone tells you and joke that involves a priest (especially if the priest is pictured in a morally compromised position), tell them the story of Vincent Cappodanno, or Luis Padillo, and the many many more who have served the Lord heroically. Bet to jokes tone down. And if someone’s feeling are hurt, too bad, their intent was to do harm to the reputation of the thousands of priest who go about their daily jobs with patience, faith, and fidelity to their vows.
