Hello! I would like to say that if you want to post something in this category, you must need an article link. Since your topic and your post doesn’t seem something that you would put in the news category, I might just move it to casual discussion just for now until someone will put it in the proper category.

Moved again to Social Justice where the Communism/ Socialism/ Capitalism etc topics usually go.

As for the encyclical, I’ve been hearing people complain that Pope Francis leans Communist for years now. However, viewing his encyclical in light of past Popes’ encyclicals on property ownership, I’m not seeing anything particularly new about it.

I note we currently have 7 other open threads on “Fratelli tutti” so you might want to check those out. Here is the search result for you:

I’m waiting for my hard copy to arrive so I can read it more comfortably. I have looked it over online, and read the some of the commentary too. To me, it is what I’ve always understood as Catholic social teaching, thinking less of our own individual security and wellbeing, and more of those around us, our brothers and sisters who are in need. Being less self centered and more altruistic. I see it as a timely document as well, asking us to focus less tribally and more globally in seeing everyone as our brother and sister potentially in need. I also do not see this push for more social concern as a push for communism, especially atheistic communism as we have known it. Far from it, in fact!

I am reading it, but I am reading it very slowly - some points each day. I have no more time for this and also - I am taking notes and my reflections down on the paper. So - this is slow.

The first impressions are:
  • The encyclical speaks about fraternity and it frames the fraternity as the goal itself. But I doubt that - fraternity is just the way of communication and collaboration and co-living of people and people have their own goals and their own happiness to achieve. And exactly those personal goals determine the utility, the common good, the economics.
  • I like the quote:
to dream and to turn our life into a wonderful adventure’
it is exactly the New Jerusalem on the Earth which I am trying to achieve
  • as always with Catholic social teachings - it is mostly addressed to those who have, who can donate and can share, to direct their thoughts and deeds. But I would like to hear from the Pontiff and Church also more direction for those who have not - that it is their duty to look for opportunities as small as their are, that is it their duties to ask for education and skills building and vote accordingly (for those who can make more affordable education and vocational training and human development) that it is their duties to strive for growth, to put behind the poverty mindset. Of course - such efforts from those who have not requires support, but still - they have at least one one in the elections and this vote should not be wasted in the ideological battles but should be invested in the eradication of poverty and in support for the integral human development.
Still I have so much to read.

Today I tried to read it again, but it is very, very hard to read. I am accustomed to the Science literature where everything is analyzed, referenced and thorougly thought. But encyclical is so general and so dense with contentious claims that I am moving my notes from paper to the Excel. Each paragraph takes to much reflection and personal discussion.

This reminds me of the forum https://www.ultimatebrokebackforum.com/ which is exclusively devoted to the movie “Brokeback Mountain” - there is special thread for each of actor, each of scene! I guess - there can be similar forum for the Fratelli Tutti in which each paragraph is addressed in separate thread.

So - maybe this talk, discussions and reflection is the main point of encyclical - as a ignition and not as the ultimate answer.
