“In the Orthodox Churches they have kept that pristine liturgy, so beautiful. We have lost a bit the sense of adoration. They keep, they praise God, they adore God, they sing, time doesn’t count. God is the center, and this is a richness that I would like to say on this occasion in which you ask me this question. Once, speaking of the Western Church, of Western Europe, especially the Church that has grown most, they said this phrase to me: “Lux ex oriente, ex occidente luxus.” Consumerism, wellbeing, have done us so much harm. Instead you keep this beauty of God at the center, the reference. When one reads Dostoyevsky – I believe that for us all he must be an author to read and reread, because he has wisdom – one perceives what the Russian spirit is, the Eastern spirit. It’s something that will do us so much good. We are in need of this renewal, of this fresh air of the East, of this light of the East.”

It appears from this report that the Pope has indicated that the Roman or Latin Church is in need of the fresh air of the East? But I haven’t seen any indication that he has applied this to the OF liturgy today? For example, the recent WYD Mass in South America was quite modern liturgically. with a lot of dancing preceding the liturgy?

He’s only been Pope for a few months. It takes a lot longer than that to make universal changes to the liturgy. The Pope does not plan the WYD liturgies or usually have any (name removed by moderator)ut.

Yes, however, even his WYD Mass was very different from BXVI’s WYD Masses, and he has the same Maestro.

EVERY WYD Mass is different than the ones that come before. The host country has the most influence.

I don’t think it is a matter of Pope Francis changing things but he doesn’t seem to have a strong interest in liturgy. So one would expect that he is much more hands-off regarding the Masses he celebrates that are planned by others than Pope Benedict was. Pope Benedict had a strong love of the Liturgy and wanted everything to be “just right”.
