Prayer for the Pope

From A Catholic Prayer Book

V. Let us pray for Francis the Pope.
R. May the Lord preserve him, give him a long life, make him blessed upon the earth, and may the Lord not hand him over to the power of his enemies.

V. May your hand be upon your holy servant.
R. And upon your son whom you have anointed.

Let us pray. O God, the Pastor and Ruler of all the faithful, look down, in your mercy, upon your servant, Pope Francis., whom you have appointed to preside over your Church; and grant, we beseech you, that both by word and example, he may edify all those under his charge; so that, with the flock entrusted to him, he may arrive at length unto life everlasting. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Memorare (Prayer to Our Lady)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

A few weeks ago, I ran across Anthony Quinn on TMC, in “Shoes of the Fisherman”.and watched it again. I thought about that film’s Pope Kiril, the First after Pope Benedict resigned, wondering if such a character could ever be elected over obvious choices from Italy, Europe, America. I applaud the Conclave for such a bold move since he echoes so many parallels between himself and the fictional Pope Kiril I. Though not imprisoned like the title character, he deals with a restrictive Argentine government, is not a publicity seeker, enjoys being among the common man and shows concern for the poor and downtrodden of the planet. His Papacy may prove even more noteworthy than the Hollywood script that produced Kiril I. His Holiness, Pope Francis I may illustrate that life is stranger than fiction.

May the Lord preserve our Holy Father, Pope Francis, give him life and make him blessed upon earth and deliver him not to the will of his enemies.

Yes, let us pray for our new Holy Father.

Who should be known as Pope Francis, not Pope Francis I, the same way that King John of England is not known as King John I. But Pope Lackland has a certain truth to it.

And 100,000+ posts is a lot.

So if another Pope in the future, chose to be named Francis, would he be Francis, the 2nd?

Father God, Thank you for the gift we have received in our new pope, Francis.

We humbly ask you to bless him with wisdom and courage, health and strength, patience and grace. Help us to remember him in our prayers always, and let our ears be open to hear Your Voice through his words.

Lord be with your servant, now and always. And most especially, O Lord, grant him peace in his heart, and comfort as he confronts the challenges ahead.

I ask this most humbly in the name of your son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen.
