Pope John XXIII's skepticism about saints

If those things are true, then I’m glad the following Popes had less bias and more common sense about these great saints. I have yet to read anything about “fascist money” concerns in any event. Seems more of a concern that Padre Pio was a charlatan because his order was annoyed at him for not giving the money to them. He also did sign over the hospital.

That seems odd to me. Pope John seems to have acted without bias and with much common sense. Those are not the features that would promote these extraordinary people.

OTOH, St Faustina was a native of Cracow, where JP2 was archbishop. He was knowledgeable about her, and about her devotees, and biased towards her. He probably was responsible for the diocesan portion of the investigations into her. It was his devotion that moved her process forward, not an impartial attitude.

Padre Pio was also familiar to JP before he was Pope. He may even have confessed to him near the end of Pio’s life. Again, it was a bias toward Pio that supported the recognition of his sanctity, not the academic impartiality that is supposed to drive the process.

Canonizations happen when people are inspired and committed by the candidate. When the person has great power, like a Pope, they happen faster. That is how the process chooses saints who can inspire others.
