In a couple posts here on these forums I’ve heard mention of Pope John Paul II kissing the Kuran. Could anyone give me more detail on this? I’m puzzled, as I consider JPII a pretty conservative Pope. I believe many Christians would have accepted martyrdom rather than do something like that…

You might want to look at those threads; the issue has been beat to pieces.

As best I understand it, it happened, and it is a sign within that culture of respect for both the gift and the giver. It is not, and was not meant to be, a statement as to the truth or validity of anything contained therein.

Further, one needs to read what the Church has said about other, non-Christian religions before reacting.

I don’t know about him kissing the Koran but I do know that he is doing much for true peace and love and respect among religions in the world.

Kissing is not an act of worship. In Arab culture is it not also common for men to kiss on each cheek as a greeting?

RNRobert,

He kisses lots of things. At least, he used to. It’s not worth worrying about, as far as I’m concerned.

Have you folks ever read the Koran, or even just read samples from it? If someone were to even give me a copy as my “own”, the first thing I would do would be to burn it.

The book denies our faith and calls for our murder. If that is something to embrace, then I don’t know what you’re thinking.

The Bible is used in court, and plenty people swear on it, who do not believe what it contains. There may not have been a dialogue between those two if John Paul II did not kiss the Koran. It was not plastered all over the Internet, but the other guy may have had to kiss the Pope’s hand… have you thought of that? 😃

It is hard not to snap back at this response. Perhaps you might read the documents of Vatican 2?

He didn’t embrace the Koran. He received it as a gift and responded in a culturally appropriate fashion.

No, I haven’t read the Koran, but I have read enough excerpts that I know that reducing it to a few comments makes as much sense as taking a swipe at the Bible because it talks of dashing out the brains of babies on a rock.

Old news and irrelevant at that. It is superstition to believe that the act of kissing an inanimate object has any real significance. I kissed the Blarney Stone. Doing so is NOT a sign that I embrace druidic or anyother pagan ideal.

My first stay in Damascus I generously tipped the two room service guys (George, a Catholic, and Muhammad, a Muslim, a real Mutt-and-Jeff pair) because they had done a good job keeping my room up and had been real nice to me. My second visit their supervisor saw me on the street the first or second day, ran up to me, hugged me, kissed me on each cheek and then smack on the mouth :bigyikes: He had a moustache. Ptui! 😃

As far as the Pope’s kissing habits are concerned, back when he was traveling and was more limber, he used to bend over and kiss the ground as soon as he got off his aircraft. I wouldn’t be too concerned about his kissing a copy of the Qur’an.

BTW, I have a copy; consider it a “know thine enemy” resource.

The Pope still gives respect by kissing the Kuran (or Koran) b/c of respect. Jesus didnt like the way the Romans were running things in Jerusalem, yet he encouraged people to pay taxes to Ceasar as you pay homage to God. Romans were bad in killing people without good cause yet never challenged the Roman empire.

Like what Jesus taught us, love your neighbor as you love yourself.
